D&D - Dec 1, 2011

Sorry about the late posting. Only a few weeks left of Thursday night classes. Hey, has anyone had any problems downloading from Mediafire? Should we upload to a mirror host? Might just have to break down and get a paid Mediafire account in order to have direct links...

Anyway...topics from today included a discussion about New Jersey's (lack of) funding for smoking cessation programs, another visit to the land of Bikegate / militant bicyclists, a short news break about the sex scandal at the NJ Nat'l Guard, another debate about medical marijuana, callers' experiences with DYFS (inspired by the sad Tierra Morgan murder case), and a poll about the strangest foods ever consumed by listeners.

D&D Primer Course #2 - The 94.7 WCSX Days

Here's the history of The Deminski & Doyle Show (at least to the best of our knowledge):

1993 or 1994-1999 -- NJ 101.5-FM WKXW
1999-2007 -- Detroit 97.1-FM WKRK (changed to WXYT-FM in Oct 2007)
2008 -- "Non-compete" year, remained off the air due to clause in WKRK contract
2009 -- Detroit 94.7-FM WCSX (classic rock station)
2010-2011 -- "D&D Fill-In Tour" in Philly, New Orleans, Minnesota, California, & Miami
July 2011-present -- Back at NJ 101.5-FM WKXW

Last weekend we highlighted some classic D&D moments from the WKRK 97.1 days...this weekend, we're going to expose new D&D listeners to the WCSX year of 2009. Jeff and Bill took over the morning slot in January, 2009 with high expectations, but the format of the "new" D&D show was vastly different than what their old fans were used to and the management of the new station often pushed back against their formula that worked so well for so many years in the drive time afternoon slot. They parted ways with WCSX after the holiday break at the end of the year and they were given the rare chance to say goodbye to Detroit for what would turn out to be the final time on January 4, 2010. There were many scattered, fragmented days during 2009 that many may consider forgettable, but there were a ton of hilarious moments as well, largely thanks to their supporting cast -- screener / asst. producer / all around "show bitch" Rudy DeSantis, "benign tumor" weather girl Nicole Salem, producer and Louie Anderson impersonator Jim O'Brien, and the "sports guys," Jason Carr, and Jamie Samuelsen.

During the first two weeks of 2010, we compiled our favorite shows and segments from the boys' previous year at WCSX. The "Top 9 of 2009" list was honestly more than nine moments -- it included reposts of some full-show podcasts (remote broadcasts, special edition shows, etc.), as well as some of our favorite moments from various shows. Here are links to those posts from early 2010 -- all podcasts have been reposted to Mediafire and are noted with "***New 2011 mirror link" or similar notifications.

Top 9 of 2009 Countdown:
(be sure to CLICK each link to go that entry's full post and podcasts)

#9: September 24, 2009 -- "Give Away Everything That's Not Bolted Down Day" -- This date didn't specifically stand out, but this day featured a ton of prize giveaways, something that has always been a staple of the D&D show over the years. Bonus clips included other memorable giveaway moments from throughout the year as well as the two-part Jeff Deminski vs. Tonya Harding story.

#8: August, 2009 -- "BikeGate" -- Jeff and Bill (ok, fine, mainly Jeff) pissed off a bunch of "militant" bicyclists in August with their segment about cyclists' unwillingness to share the road properly. They read a bunch of the nasty e-mails they received on the air; many were from people who had never heard of the show nor heard the "offensive" segment. "Bikegate" was capped by an interview with one of the Bicycle Taliban members. Bonus clips included a few from July 15: Rudy's Jager Challenge, Jim O'Brien's on-air tai-chi fail, and Rudy's bike crash and Harry Potter fandom.

#7: 3/11/09, 4/10/09, & 10/30/09 -- "Live Pistons & Tigers Broadcasts" -- The show aired a handful of remote broadcasts in 2009 and these three were all sports related. They broadcast live from The Palace of Auburn Hills twice and one from The Elwood Bar & Grill for the Tigers' home opener. Bonus clips included a bunch of other Pistons- and Tigers-related interviews from throughout the year.

#6: April - May, 2009 -- "Red Wings Playoff Giveaways" -- Jeff and Bill did not have any remote broadcasts from Joe Louis during 2009, but the station did have a close relationship with the Red Wings. Chris Chelios did about a dozen weekly interviews with D&D, and they had a ton of ticket giveaways during the Wings' run to the Stanley Cup Finals which are highlighted here. The April 16 show is reposted in its entirety (this included the hilarious "Fatwa!" segment) and bonus clips included the other playoff ticket giveaways, various Red Wings interviews, and a couple of random segments (Rudy's spelling bee quiz / Pfister hotel discussion and Jeff and Nicole's Kwame text reenactments).

#5: Feb. 13-16, 2009 -- "D&D's RV of Love Weekend for CLF of Michigan" -- This was possibly the funniest couple shows of the year. Jeff and Bill agreed to spend a weekend together on an RV raising money for the Children's Leukemia Foundation of Michigan; unbeknownst to them, they agreed to do it on Valentine's Day weekend. Callers and co-workers had a great time ragging on D&D and their "RV of Love." I even had my own fifteen second of fame when they played a "Guy Love" (song from Scrubs) remix I made on the air. Both the Feb. 13 (Friday) and Feb. 16 (Monday) shows are reposted in whole, and bonus clips included Doyle's opinions on man-touching, an in-studio appearance by Dr. Alan Grodin, DDS after he won a station auction, as well as a bunch of other D&D mashup clips I made throughout the year.

#4: January 5, 2010 -- "First Show on WCSX" -- This entry includes both the Jan. 5 broadcast (the guys' first "official" show on WCSX) as well as their midnight New Years' Eve "non-compete expiration" broadcast. We were actually missing the first 45 minutes of the 1/5/09 show for months until another listener sent us his recording. Bonus clips included D&D's final live show on WKRK/WXYT 97.1 (Dec. 7, 2007) and one of their first ever morning shows after the 97.1 format flip (Oct. 4, 2007). Also included are highlights from Jason Carr's final day at WCSX, highlights of Jamie Sameulsen's first day as Carr's replacement, and some random 1/15/09 clips.

#3: March 17, 2009 -- "St. Patrick's Day at WCSX" -- Yes, even a morning show can have a live broadcast from a bar on St. Patty's Day. They may not have gotten quite the audience that they did at their live St. Patrick's Day afternoon shows at WKRK, but they still managed to get some listeners out there drinking (responsibly!) at 6am. Bonus clips included 17 other drinking-related segments from throughout 2009 as well as producer Jim O'Brien's ROFL-inducing experience with hypnotist Kevin Lepine from June 16.

#2: Sept 9, 2009 -- "Beatles Rockband Listener Open House" -- Open houses were a staple of the D&D Show while they were at WKRK, but they were a rare occurrence at WCSX. One of the best ones was on 9/9/09 when they opened the doors to anyone who wanted to come in and play Beatles Rockband on the day it was released (side note: I have this game and honestly probably haven't played it since 2009). Bonus clips included all the various "Super Bonus Points" moments from 2009 -- a simple misunderstanding by Jeff in an e-mail cost him $300 and made him the butt off jokes for the rest of the year.

#1: May 14, 2009 & July - September, 2009 -- "Faces Not Numbers" & "Workforce Business of the Day" -- Jim O'Brien came up with the idea for the FNN campaign on April 1; listeners who were affected by how the recession hit the auto industry sent in photos and the campaign culminated on May 14 with a live broadcast from Washington, D.C. In my opinion, this was the single coolest thing the show did during 2009. The lack of partisanship in this campaign made for an amazing metaphor for the show and how different Jeff and Bill are from most talk show hosts. The WFBotD campaign from the summer was another way the show gave back to the Detroit community. Jeff asked for (and eventually received) thousands of dollars from the station in order to raffle away a month's worth of free advertising to a random local company. Numerous companies were featured throughout the campaign (one per day); every day Jeff or Bill read an on-air ad for the daily featured company and they often interviewed the owner as well. Bonus clips included various other political interviews from 2009 as well as some other WFBotD-related clips (Nicole's "balut challenge" was one of the most memorable).

BONUS: These two clips were not originally featured as part of this countdown in January, 2010, but they deserve to be heard again. Jeff Deminski's past as a stand-up comic is often obvious, especially during self-depricating moments. His "Tampon Dam" plumbing disaster story from Feb. 9 and his "Bottle Pee Incident" from Mar. 25 will possibly cause you to laugh to the point of pissing, so you may not want to listen at work. Ironically, both stories involve his now-ex-wife; I wonder if the show had a part to play in their divorce? :)

D&D - Aug 9, 2010 - Philly's WPHT 1210am

There were a number of local (Philly) story updates in this show -- some further background came out about Stacy Strauss, the woman charged in the death of the autistic 20-year-old, more numbers from the DROP retirement scandal were revealed, pedo teacher David Devine's "summer camp" was mentioned again, and Philadelphia Daily News' Stu Bykofsky (who Jeff and Bill spoke with last week) is having a "candidate's comedy night." Other topics covered included a few other local stories (merits of the death penalty in Philly, a cop's hit-and-run admission, and new ways to fight prostitution in the City of Brotherly Love) as well as another chat with Phillies' manager Charlie Manuel, a Sarah Palin vs. Kate Gosselin update, a groom killer story from Turkey, and a scientific update on the "five second rule." Call-in segments included debates on Wikileaks, Proposition 8, airport body scanners, "Obamacare," and Arizona's SB 1080. Callers also chimed in on a couple of Deminski rants -- he told a story about a shopping cart "accident" and once again gave his opinion on bicyclists.

D&D - Top 9 of 2009 - #8

As we mentioned yesterday, the word "shows" in this Top Nine D&D "Shows" of 2009 countdown is in quotation marks for a reason. Today's entry isn't a specific show, but rather a topic of contention that popped up a couple times in 2009 (and once in 2008). Jeff Deminski's public rant against annoying, self-absorbed, holier-than-thou bicyclists caused quite a stir when it first aired in August (more like the day after it aired when the Bicycle Borg Collective across the country began their e-mail and voicemail campaign), but it actually wasn't the first time this topic was mentioned on the show. He first brought it up back in January, but I guess since it wasn't a segment inspired by an anti-bicyclist-target-practice law, they were spared the full wrath of the Cyclist Hive that time. Both on-air segments were borne from a blog post Jeff made during the no-compete year of 2008. Here's what we had to say back on August 10, 2009 about the pedal-pushers' responses to D&D's original August segment:

Wow has this show evolved. Their FCC complaints used to be about Dirty Sanchezes and Cleveland Steamers and now people are complaining about a rant against bicyclists? C'mon, we all know the only reason you ride a bike to work is because your license got taken away after your last DUI. The guy they interviewed today wasn't just a dick, he was a nervous dick. Come to think of it, maybe the issue here is not that the show has changed since 2002 (though of course it has), rather perhaps bicyclists (and Americans in general) are too self-absorbed and self-centric and just appalled when someone calls them out on their bullshit.

Here's the bike-related audio (unlike the full-show reposts, we've pulled most of the sports and traffic out of the partial podcast reposts):

1. July 13, 2008 -- Found a Google cache of Jeff's original anti-bicyclist blog post from 2008 that includes all the original idiotic responses
2. January 19 -- Jeff brings up the topic of annoying bicyclists who think they own the road for the first time on WCSX
3. August 5-10 Part 1 -- The original "BikeGate" segment from August and the first inkling of the backlash...plus a bonus "Rudy's grossed out by shower-pee" segment
4. August 5-10 Part 2 -- Continuous coverage of "BikeGate" Day 2...voicemails and e-mails from the wingnuts are read and played on the air...Jim is working to get an alternate viewpoint on the air
5. August 5-10 Part 3 -- "BikeGate" Week 2 features Paul Allman, a board member of the Washtenaw Bicycling and Walking Coalition came on the show for a little on-air cagematch

The best part of this? The bicyclists actually think they had something to do with the departure of D&D from WCSX! This is like Rush Limbaugh thinking he had something to do with Obama losing the elec--oh, wait. Bad example.

BONUS PODCASTS (updated 2011 Mediafire links):

While searching for the aforementioned BikeGate audio, I stumbled upon the July 15 show, which could have been on this list in its own right. Here are a few WCSX.com podcasts from that day -- inspired by the TV show, Rudy plays a "Catch It, Keep It" challenge with a bottle of Jager, Jim O'Brien barely survives an on-air tai-chi demonstration, and Rudy later embarrasses himself by recounting his recent bike crash and his plans to go to see the new Harry Potter movie by himself.

D&D - Aug 10, 2009

Other (obviously less important) topics covered today included a couple quizzes for Rudy (texting shorthand and rock band "madien names"), a couple Stupid Nicole Stories, a disturbing 911 call from a guy who pushed his girlfriend out a window, a horrible cover of and Eagles song, new anti-smoking job requirements, as well as a couple short blurbs about "tainted" houses for sale and canine intelligence. David Sklena, owner of Doc Sweets' Candy (today's Workforce Business of the Day winner) popped on the air as well to plug his shop. Other segments were (courtesy of WCSX.com):

1. WTKK (link) - D&D are begin simulcasted on Greater Media's Boston-based sister station 96.9 WTKK this week while Don "Nappy Roots" Imus is on vacation. Good for Jeff & Bill to get some more exposure and possibly some new listeners (especially nice to see them back on an all-talk station), but could they maybe get to sub on something other than a conservative, ultra right-wing station next time?
2. BIKE GATE: WEEK 2 (podcast) - D&D spoke with Paul Alman from the Washtenaw Bicycling and Walking Coalition about our discussion last week regarding bicyclists and safety...[also, here are a few of the anti-D&D blogs, newspaper articles, and e-mail list postings that have popped up.]
3. BOWEN KERINS (podcast) - D&D talked to Bowen Kerins - world pinball champ from Salem, Massachusetts. So is it a "sport," something takes skill - or is it just a game? [I'm not sure myself, but like some sports, it is something that causes people to swear on the air.]
4. ROD ALLEN (podcast) - Rod Allen called in for his weekly Tigers report - will we continue our streak against the Red Sox? Rod also talked about being at Fenway Park.

D&D - Aug 5, 2009

[8:09am - Just a heads-up -- we had some Internet issues this morning, so until my backup source gets off work tonight, today's show will be missing from about 6:30am until about 7:45am. If anyone else could get us an audio source sooner, that'd be awesome. :^]

[12:18am - UPDATE: Finally got home and got this damn thing updated, sorry, forgot I had plans tonight...new links are below]

Happy Hump-day, all. As I wrote earlier, the primary audio source that we use had Internet issues, so we're still missing a little over an hour of the show. This should be fixed by tonight. In the meantime, two segments that didn't get recorded were made into WCSX podcasts on the official website -- see #1 and #3 below. Y'know, other radio shows I listen to have subscription services where they offer full-show podcasts. I'm conflicted; I'd jump right on this if it was something D&D offered, but then this website would become obsolete. :) We'll just have to see...anyway, here are a few other topics that were covered on the show this morning (at least between 6-6:30am or between 7:40-9:03am): a Cash for Clunkers used VHS/DVD movie drive, a Dear-Abby-I'm-a-Slut letter, and another D & De-rive In Double-Feature movie quiz / ticket giveaway, as well as a couple short local blurbs about the Detroit election results and a Dearborn got who got hit by plane poop. Podcast-worthy topics (as so deemed by WCSX.com) were:

1. RUDY'S GROSS-OUT (podcast) - It normally takes a lot to offend Rudy...He is obsessed with horror flicks and serial killers...but people who urinate in the shower turns his stomach?
2. BICYCLISTS [updated link] (podcast) - Jeff Deminski hates bicyclists! They are road hogs, and never obey the rules of the road...Some states are considering laws that you can't throw things at them...[don't forget to read Jeff's blog rant from last year on this topic!]
3. LOCAL ARMED ROBBERIES (podcast) - There have been a few stories in the news about some local armed robberies...Have you ever been robbed at gun point? What did you do? If you haven't...What would you do?
4. BRIAN PELIONE (podcast) - Brian is from Warren and a huge Boston Red Sox fan...So he built a replica of the "Green Monster" in his front yard! How cool is that? Especially playing home run derby! Nice work Brian!
5. KIDS & CELL PHONES (podcast) - Would you give your child their own personal cell phone? We are talking 8-11 year olds...There was a survey that says one in four 8 to 11 year olds has a cell phone! This just in...Sexting on the rise!
