D&D - Blast From the Past #8

The Deminski and Doyle Show has had a run on three radio stations (so far) and they've been fortunate enough to have had the chance to say "goodbye" on two of them -- screw you, CBS! From what I can surmise from the audio clips I've heard, the on-air stories I've heard over the years in Detroit, and the Wayback Machine, Jeff and Bill left WKXW voluntarily in 1999 in order to take a better gig in Detroit. "Live 97.1" was apparently a pioneer in the late 90's; Howard Stern's top-rated syndicated show and D&D's brand of "intellectual humor" helped put WKRK on the map -- for a few years, at least. When Howard left, non-political, non-sports FM Talk seemed to turn into a late-stage fad in Detroit. Regardless, D&D were a drive-time ratings giant during a large part of the last decade; there weren't many other entertaining options other than music in the afternoon (at least until satellite radio got big).

Here is the final couple segments from D&D's last show in New Jersey; we just went through the final show on WCSX earlier this month, and starting next week, we'll be featuring their final run on WXYT from October-December 2007.

D&D - Blast From the Past #7

This is the last game D&D played at NJ-101.5 WKXW in August, 1999, just before they left for Detroit. Deminski was desperately trying to give away some of his crap from his apartment that he didn't want to take with him. Tomorrow we'll have up the very last segment Jeff & Bill ever broadcast in NJ; it's also the final WKXW segment we have audio of. Have no fear, we're starting a hunt for more! Craigslist, here we come!

D&D - Blast From the Past #6

Today's segment features perhaps the youngest person ever to call into the Deminski & Doyle Show. I almost fell out of my chair laughing while listening to Jeff and Bill try to convince a juvenile delinquent not to go down the path of immorality. I kept waiting for them to talk about staying in school, staying away from drugs, and remembering to use condoms. As Jeff has always said, the callers are what make the show funny. The best bits are when they take something from the headlines and invite people to call in.

D&D - Blast From the Past #5

The WKXW 101.5 D&D segments we're highlighting this week and last all came from some unlabeled, 11-year-old cassette tapes, so part of the fun was converting them, cleaning them up, and trying to find date for them. The segment today is the only one we weren't able to pinpoint a date for; our best estimate would be a Friday from early July 1999 (or possibly late June). It's (most of) another round of Bill Doyle's favorite game, "Match Game" -- though this one was not one of the most successful. Listen for Jeff's awesome, begging-to-be-made-into-a-drop quote at the 20:35 mark.

D&D - Blast From the Past #4

Rudy and Nicole weren't always the whipping boys (and girls) of the Deminski and Doyle Show. The guys worked with Beaver (AKA "Bill T.") at WKRK 97.1 and at WKXW 101.5 in New Jersey, but there was another member of their old "cast of characters" in NJ that absorbed some friendly abuse. Erik "Fem Boy" Van Ness started as an intern with D&D and eventually moved on to the production team with WKXW, but succumbed to an illness at a young age just a few years after Jeff and Bill left for Detroit. Here's what the New Jersey "cousin" who provided us with the 101.5 segments had to say about him:

I don't know if you had listened to all the segments yourself yet, but they had a guy on their old show named Erik Van Ness. He started out with the show I think as an intern, and he did wacky and stupid things for the show. He was called "Fem Boy" because he always seemed very concerned about his hair. He was a great part of the show. After D&D left, he went on to work in production for 101.5. He was great in that aspect. Sadly, he lost his battle with cystic fibrosis in 2002. They named one of work studios after him at WKXW. He was a part of D&D history. I just wanted to pass along that. I feel it should be mentioned. I'm not 100% on this, but I believe D&D called in to 101.5 when it happened.

Here's (most of) a segment featuring "Fem Boy," as well as Beaver:

D&D - Blast From the Past #3

From what I've heard, the Deminski & Doyle Show on NJ 101.5 consisted of call-in games and "Beaver's Our Bitch" segments. Not that there's anything wrong with that! He was always such a good sport. They mentioned the first ever embarrassing Beaver segment was sending him to a convenience store asking for a small size condoms -- unfortunately, we have no audio for that classic moment. Today's featured segment dates back to the week before Star Wars: Episode I debuted (btw, we're 99% sure on most of the show dates). Listen as an irate Beaver (in drag) demands to see the movie a week early!

D&D - Blast From the Past #2

Before Jeff and Bill called Detroit their hometown, they were on the air for six years in New Jersey, where Deminski grew up. Listening now, it seems very, very wrong for them to be rooting for non-Michigan sports teams, but here they are giving away New Jersey Devils playoff tickets during a round of Match Game. The joke was on them; though the Devils would go on to win that first game, they would end up losing the series to nearby rival Pittsburgh in seven games.

Site note...NJ listeners must not have been that bright, as this was a pretty rough "sports-centered" round of Match Game. And it looks like Bill T. (Beaver) was always bad at this game. I'm surprised anyone won anything in Detroit with his and Rudy's answers! :)

D&D - Blast From the Past #1

Thanks to some "connections in Jersey" (no, not the Mafia, just a fellow listener who has an awesome cousin out east) we now have a small collection of Deminski & Doyle Show clips from the end of their run at New Jersey's 101.5-FM WKXW. Jeff and Bill hosted a show out there from 1993-1999 before coming to Detroit. Beaver (then known as "Bill T.") was also a part of the show; from what we were told, he started as a phone screener and eventually turned into the show's "bitch," as evidenced by this first clip. Also take note of young-Jeff's hilarious New Jersey accent.

D&D - Top 9 of 2009 - #1

The top entry in our countdown is actually a tie (I knew I should have made it a "Top 10!") between two truly awesome campaigns D&D ran in 2009, "Faces Not Numbers" and the "Workforce Business of the Day."

--------------

The first campaign was the brainchild of Jim O'Brien; as the auto industry teetered on the edge of bankruptcy and failure, it didn't appear that TPTB would be looking out for the little guy. Massive plant and dealership closures meant a lot of lost jobs, so Jim and the rest of the guys wanted to force the administration to look at the faces of those affected by the auto industry troubles. "Faces Not Numbers" (inspired by the Bob Seger song, "Feel Like a Number") turned into a massive campaign in which listeners who worked for, had family who worked for, or whose job was somehow connected to the Michigan auto industry sent in photos of themselves for a giant banner which was taken to Washington, DC and unfurled in front of the Capitol Building. Huge props to Stahl's ID Direct for stepping up and making the banner when the original sponsor dropped out. We have available for download audio from April 1 when Jim came up with the original idea (WCSX podcasts - Part 1 and Part 2), another WCSX podcast from May 12 when the guys interviewed Elaine from Stahl's ID Direct and took calls when they realized they'd need volunteers for the "preview" at the Sterling Heights Chrysler plant, an audio clip from the April 24 show when D&D played a clip from WDIV Channel 4, a couple videos from WXYZ Channel 7 (read their article here) and Fox 2, and two YouTube videos (a "D-List" style video from Jeff and Bill about the campaign and a video clip from the Chrysler plant "preview"). You can also grab the entire May 14 show below -- D&D broadcast the show live from Washington, DC, just hours before the official unveiling of the banner.

BONUS PODCASTS
(updated 2011 Mediafire links):

These aren't related to the "Faces Not Numbers" campaign, but here are a handful of podcasts from the other few times D&D interviewed either a politician or a pundit.

1. January 7 - Governor Granholm is once again one of the first interviews D&D got for their new station
2. January 21 - Rep. Gary Peters spoke to D&D about the Obama inauguration
3. June 3 - Left-wing journalist Richard Wolffe called in to speak about his new book, Renegade
4. September 2 - Right-wing former Gov. & DHS Secretary Tom Ridge plugged his new book, Test of Our Times

Speaking of the inauguration, we also have the entire Jan 20 and Jan 21 shows available (with updated 2011 Mediafire links), which include:

(Jan 20) - Highlights from D&D today included a ton of discussion regarding today's mega-event in DC, including clips from Jon Stewart, MLK, and Forest Whitaker, as well as an Inauguration Drinking Game, various Obama songs, and interviews with Roy Gross (local guy from Taylor who joined Obama on his train ride to DC), and Congressman Gary Peters (D-MI, MI-09)...
(Jan 21) - The first D&D show of the President Obama era contained, of course, quite a bit of "
Inauguration Recap." Roy Gross from Taylor was interviewed again, and clips from yesterday's TV coverage were played including a final goodbye to Bush, Chief Justice Roberts' Yoda's major Oath of Office fumble, a bit of poetry from civil-rights leader Joseph Lowry, thoughts from Jon Stewart and Jimmy Kimmel, a bit of "My Count--ry 'Tis of Thee" from Aretha Franklin, and an updated view of Dubya from Kayne West. Senator Ted Kennedy's hospital visit was also mentioned...

--------------

The show launched their second giant campaign in July, the "Workforce Business of the Day." This was Jeff's idea; he wanted to give back to the community and local small businesses by giving out a free commercial a day and a grand prize of $20,000 worth of free advertising. Many of the companies selected also had a chance to put a spokesperson on the air with D&D to plug their business alongside the advertisement read by Deminski. Below are several of the many references the show made to the campaign from July to September, and you can download here (updated 2011 Mediafire link) a collection of all the 60-second advertisements Jeff read on the air and a list of the winning companies.

1. July 15 - The initial idea was proposed...
2. July 16 - ...and approved by management...
3. July 17 - ...and the updates continued until the campaign started on...
4. July 27 - ...when the first company was selected, Connie's Children's Shop
5. September 14 - The eventual grand-prize winner, the Java Hutt Cafe, is plugged (also included is a Craigslist "missed connections" segment and a Weird Al song)
6. September 21 - The Java Hutt Cafe is informed of their prize

BONUS PODCASTS:

Another company chosen, Doc Sweets' Candy Company, sent in some free candy to the show, including chocolate-covered crickets. Nicole devoured these and later took part in the "Balut Challenge." (both are updated 2011 Mediafire links)

D&D - Top 9 of 2009 - #2

The Deminski & Doyle Show has always thrived on listener interaction. And not just of the call-in-and-talk-on-the-radio variety. Open houses and listener gatherings have been a staple of the show for as long as I can remember. There was the St. Patty's Day live show, as we highlighted yesterday, as well as the Tigers' opening day broadcast from the Ellwood that we mentioned last week. As far as off-air parties and events went, there was the New Years Eve bash, a Superbowl party, a Halloween party, and, of course, the Super Bonus Points events (more on those later) -- Jeff ponied up for free burgers in March and the guys gave away ticket for a screening of "Year One" in June. The final Super Bonus Points event was supposed to be a free breakfast; this ended up being delayed, but when it did happen, it coincided with the coolest open house the guys have ever done. On 9/9/09, to commemorate the release of the Beatles Rock Band game (and the remastered CDs), D&D opened up the studio to any listener who wanted to come in any play. A deluxe edition of the game was given away, "Jack Nicholson" stopped in to sing, and fun was had by all. A couple Beatles-related interviews from previous days were replayed; Jeff and Bill spoke to Giles Martin live from Abbey Road Studios on Sept. 4, and Beatles Rock Band creator Josh Randall was interviewed on Sept. 3 (both are updated 2011 Mediafire 2012 Rapidshare links). Unfortunately, no video exists (that we have, at least) of the event, but there is a video of the WCSX Beatles Rock Band midnight release party from the night before.

BONUS PODCASTS
(updated 2011 Mediafire 2012 Rapidshare links):

As mentioned above, the Super Bonus Points goof-up by Jeff was a continuing theme throughout the year. The original "D&D-Mail" can be viewed here (and Jeff's response is here), and here is the original segment from Feb. 26 where Jeff got faced with his mistake. "Super Bonus Points Tuesday" was March 3; here is the segment from that morning, and listen here to see how listeners responded to Jeff's attempted repentance on March 12. The "Super Bonus Points Movie" was in August; tickets were given away during on-air contests, including a movie trivia quiz on Aug 3 (listen here) and an EPIC FAIL of a movie quiz by Rudy the next day that can be heard here. Jim O'Brien kept the gag alive with his "announcer voice" -- listen to the Super Bonus Points "commercials" he made here (requires WinRAR). A listener even made a Super Bonus Points Club Card that can be viewed here.

D&D - Top 9 of 2009 - #3

This was an amusing show, but it would have been much more enjoyable had it occurred at three in the afternoon as opposed to six in the morning. Even so, a live St. Patrick's Day show always makes for fun times. Gotta love Rudy the Lush, jonesing for a drink even before they went off the air. Even at 6am, there were still people out imbibing -- early drinking was actually the topic of one of the segments. Other highlights included a spelling test for Rudy and Nicole's sexy "hydration cop" outfit (pictures still available on her Facebook page).

D&D - Top 9 of 2009 - #4

I was scanning the dial this morning to gauge the levels of humor and originality of morning radio in Metro Detroit. The show on the first station was having a discussion about a teenage girl's sex diary that was posted to Facebook, the next station was on commercial (as it was the other two times I tried to listen), the third was promoting a genital-dying product, the fourth was playing "93 straight minutes of music," and the final one was playing clips of varying-sounding orgasms from Japanese porn. I think it's time to get an XM Radio, whether D&D go that route or not.

Anyway, entry #4 on our list is a show that, content-wise, may not have been all that exciting, but it provided a very welcome moment for all fans of D&D after the "lockout" year of 2008. Their first "official" show on WCSX was on January 5, 2009, but they made their on-air debut at midnight on New Year's Day during the WCSX NYE Bash at Snookers. The best quote of the whole first show goes to Nicole -- "You'll have to think of me kinda like a benign tumor...I don't cause any harm, but I don't really do any good for anything."

D&D - Top 9 of 2009 - #5

Way back in early February, barely a month after starting at WCSX, Jeff and Bill agreed to spend a weekend together traveling around Metro Detroit on an RV to raise money for the Children's Leukemia Foundation of Michigan. They failed at the time to realize that the weekend they signed up for was Valentine's Day. This provided listeners, Rudy, the WCSX promotions staff, as well as the other on-air personalities ample opportunity to make "D&D Love Bus" jokes. The day before the event started, Jim O'Brien got his licks in with "Guy Love" (a song from Scrubs) and Nicole modeled some lingerie that she would wear if a certain CLF goal was met (pictures on her Facebook page can be found here and the video can be seen here). A listener even made a D&D "Guy Love" remix which got some airplay during the following Monday's show.

Today we feature both the Friday, Feb 13 show previewing the "RV of Love" weekend and the Monday, Feb 16 show that included a bunch of recaps of the weekend. We also have, for the first time, clips of the 5-minute-or-so call-ins Jeff and Bill made to the station throughout the weekend. They promoted the telethon and the online auction, told gut-wrenching stories about leukemia survivors that they met, and fielded good-natured gay jokes (the best kind!) from the DJs and from each other. Rudy and Nicole also called in a few times from their road locations. HUGE thanks to the listener who hooked us up with the audio from the CLF weekend waaaay back in February! Apologizes that we never got around to editing it until now.

BONUS PODCASTS (updated 2011 Mediafire links):

Here is a segment from the following show, Feb 17, where the crew discuss the virtues (or lack thereof) of the Man Hug. Doyle's opinion on this topic was revisited during, as I put it at the time, a "D&D insta-CLASSIC moment" on July 1 during a conversation about butt-dialing and inappropriate touching in the workplace.

Dr. Alan Grodin of Flossin in Clawson (a former sponsor of D&D) won the CLF auction to join the guys in the studio for a show -- he appeared on the air with Jeff and Bill on March 13 for some fun, some manwhoring, and some on-air teeth whitening questions from Jeff and Rudy (funnier than it sounds, I promise). Here is an edited version (Part 1 and Part 2) of the highlights of that show. The running gag during this show was Jeff's four-hour on-air experience with Vicodin. Other segments included a revoking of Rudy's Man Card, an in-studio appearance by comedian Dave Attell, clips from the epic Jon Stewart vs. Jim Cramer beat-down, as well as a Friday Game, "Rock and Roll Who Am I?"

Finally, inspired by the aforementioned "Guy Love" remix we made, I took my own turn at trying out some D&D audio splicing on several occasions throughout last year. Most of the time when a song was played on the air, I'd extract it and try to make a smooth instrumental segue. Sometimes these segues were 20-30 seconds long and just begged to be filled in. Here are a few of the dates and the results of my experiments:

D&D - Top 9 of 2009 - #6

Yesterday's entry in the Top Nine "Shows" of 2009 countdown included Pistons- and Tigers-related broadcasts, so today the Red Wings get their turn. While D&D didn't have any remote broadcasts, they had a TON of contests during the 2009 playoff run. April 16 was the first of several shows that contained games that, more often than not, were designed to make Rudy look like a fool but also resulted in a bunch of listeners scoring playoff tickets or other awesome prizes. This show specifically stood out due to the other segments -- Kirk Maltby hopped on the air to talk hockey with D&D, Rudy explains his desire to own weird (and possibly illegal) weapons, and the classic "Fatwa!" segment was featured. This is what we wrote about this show at the time:

The real season begins tonight for the Red Wings. One lucky D&D listener won tickets and a limo ride this morning by locating Rudy's new home. I wonder what a wall of medieval weapons would look like on the inside wall of a dumpster? In other news, there was rampant teabagging going on across the country yesterday. No mention of this on D&D; maybe they were worried about another FCC fine? There was another discussion about fat people on airplanes -- I'll agree with the airline, if your ass takes up two seats, you need to pay for two seats.

D&D - Top 9 of 2009 - #7

We have a triple-post today as we highlight some of D&D's live sports broadcasts from 2009. The show aired live from the Palace of Auburn hills twice last year -- on March 11, they were a part of the Pistons Care Telethon benefiting Feed the Children and on October 30, they set up their gear right in the Pistons' locker room (photos are still available at WCSX.com). Jeff and Bill had one other sports-related remote broadcast when they broadcast from the Elwood on April 10 for the Tigers' opening day. In my opinion, these types of shows worked a lot better when they were on in the afternoon and it was closer to game-time. Regardless, they scored some very cool interviews on those days, including Ernie Harwell, Will Bynum, Rick Mahorn, and Harlem Globtrotters' Curly Neal. The Automotion Girls also stopped by to chat when they were in the Palace locker room.

BONUS PODCASTS
(updated 2011 Mediafire links):

Here are some extra Pistons- and Tigers-related podcasts (the first six are from WCSX.com). Along with opening day, D&D interviewed Tigers legend Ernie Harwell two other times -- on March 25 regarding the passing of another Detroit Tigers broadcasting legend, George Kell, and on April 14 regarding the shocking death of Mark "The Bird" Fidrych. The show on September 17 covered the tribute the Tigers gave to Mr. Harwell the night before. Other pertinent segments included a call to Jason Carr's mother-in-law on Feb 24 to talk Pistons (plus some extra discussion about a Maxim sex survey), two death-related interviews with Pistons' play-by-play announcer George Blaha (on March 16 in regards to the passing of Pistons' President Bill Davidson and on May 11 after the death of Pistons' coaching great Chuck Daly), a "guess the Tigers' mystery fan" game (and a call-in segment about booze etiquette at a kid's birthday party) from August 20, as well as two other alcohol-related segments from October 7 (they tried to pick Miguel Cabrera's new theme song and took calls about making homemade moonshine).

D&D - Top 9 of 2009 - #8

As we mentioned yesterday, the word "shows" in this Top Nine D&D "Shows" of 2009 countdown is in quotation marks for a reason. Today's entry isn't a specific show, but rather a topic of contention that popped up a couple times in 2009 (and once in 2008). Jeff Deminski's public rant against annoying, self-absorbed, holier-than-thou bicyclists caused quite a stir when it first aired in August (more like the day after it aired when the Bicycle Borg Collective across the country began their e-mail and voicemail campaign), but it actually wasn't the first time this topic was mentioned on the show. He first brought it up back in January, but I guess since it wasn't a segment inspired by an anti-bicyclist-target-practice law, they were spared the full wrath of the Cyclist Hive that time. Both on-air segments were borne from a blog post Jeff made during the no-compete year of 2008. Here's what we had to say back on August 10, 2009 about the pedal-pushers' responses to D&D's original August segment:

Wow has this show evolved. Their FCC complaints used to be about Dirty Sanchezes and Cleveland Steamers and now people are complaining about a rant against bicyclists? C'mon, we all know the only reason you ride a bike to work is because your license got taken away after your last DUI. The guy they interviewed today wasn't just a dick, he was a nervous dick. Come to think of it, maybe the issue here is not that the show has changed since 2002 (though of course it has), rather perhaps bicyclists (and Americans in general) are too self-absorbed and self-centric and just appalled when someone calls them out on their bullshit.

Here's the bike-related audio (unlike the full-show reposts, we've pulled most of the sports and traffic out of the partial podcast reposts):

1. July 13, 2008 -- Found a Google cache of Jeff's original anti-bicyclist blog post from 2008 that includes all the original idiotic responses
2. January 19 -- Jeff brings up the topic of annoying bicyclists who think they own the road for the first time on WCSX
3. August 5-10 Part 1 -- The original "BikeGate" segment from August and the first inkling of the backlash...plus a bonus "Rudy's grossed out by shower-pee" segment
4. August 5-10 Part 2 -- Continuous coverage of "BikeGate" Day 2...voicemails and e-mails from the wingnuts are read and played on the air...Jim is working to get an alternate viewpoint on the air
5. August 5-10 Part 3 -- "BikeGate" Week 2 features Paul Allman, a board member of the Washtenaw Bicycling and Walking Coalition came on the show for a little on-air cagematch

The best part of this? The bicyclists actually think they had something to do with the departure of D&D from WCSX! This is like Rush Limbaugh thinking he had something to do with Obama losing the elec--oh, wait. Bad example.

BONUS PODCASTS (updated 2011 Mediafire links):

While searching for the aforementioned BikeGate audio, I stumbled upon the July 15 show, which could have been on this list in its own right. Here are a few WCSX.com podcasts from that day -- inspired by the TV show, Rudy plays a "Catch It, Keep It" challenge with a bottle of Jager, Jim O'Brien barely survives an on-air tai-chi demonstration, and Rudy later embarrasses himself by recounting his recent bike crash and his plans to go to see the new Harry Potter movie by himself.

D&D - Top 9 of 2009 - #9

Here's the big reveal for the next couple weeks:

Deminski & Doyle Show - Top Nine "Shows" of 2009

I put "shows" in quotation marks because while most of the entries on my list feature full shows, a few are either a partial show or span multiple shows. All the Sharebee links are new and working. We'll start with #9 -- Sept 24, 2009. This was a show that just featured a TON of games and giveaways. Here's what we wrote about this show back in September:

If we can't have the Friday Game anymore, can we have more of the Thursday "Give Away Everything That's Not Bolted Down" days like we had today? KISS tickets were given away (twice!), as were Def Leppard tickets, Lions all-you-can-eat tickets (see podcast #3 below), and Michigan Lottery tickets in another round of Play the Numbers. That was a fun show to listen to; granted, it would have been more fun had I been awake to listen to it live, as I could have tried to call in myself, but I digress. The pessimist in me wants to note that the last time D&D has this many giveaways, they were unloading random loot from their soon-to-be-unoccupied offices just before they split ways with 97.1. But I'll finish digesting the pessimist in me so you don't have to hear from him anymore. Non-contest segments from this morning included an interview with Bill Parker, President of UAW Local 1700 (they're borrowing the Faces Not Numbers banner), a debate about viewing habits for watching pro sports (in person vs. on TV -- I vote for the bar), another old-as-shit-driver-causes-accident story (at least the right person died this time), and a report on a waaay over-the-top Halloween attraction at Kings Island in Ohio (it's no accident I always cut out the Ohio Tourism commercials from the show audio). Doug "Doc of Rock" Podell jumped on the air at the end of the show as he prepped for his unexpected temp gig - subbing in for an absent Karen Savelly. Best line of the show? Doug P: "What song is up first?" Jeff D: "Isn't that kinda your job to pick them?"

Since we're on the topic of games and giveaways, here are a few bonus "classic game" segments from 2009 (updated 2011 Mediafire links):

1. April 27 -- The final "Friday Game" of 2009 (before the 9am hour was chopped off) featuring a classic round of "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon"
2a. January 21 -- A FOX-sponsored game of "Lie to Me" and the first-ever round of "Play the Numbers" (featuring an EPIC FAIL of a first attempt)
2b. Bonus short clip (17 mins) from that same day (1/21) where D&D talked about the firing of some of the local on-air talent at WDFN...foreshadowing to be sure!
3. January 23 -- Another round of "Lie to Me" with Rudy and Nicole and the second-biggest FAILTRAIN of the year, "Practice Girl Pyramid"
4. March 31 -- The worst (but funniest) game of the year, "Name That Tune on Rudy's Teeth"

P.S. As far as current updates go, the only thing we've picked up on today is regarding the future of Rudy and Jim. Nicole posted a message on her Facebook page indicating that Rudy is no longer with WCSX and Jim was on the air this morning with Nicole and Jamie -- not sure if he'll keep producing in the morning for Ken Calvert starting next week or not.

UPDATE: Here are a couple more bonus podcasts from January 2009...D&D interviewed Tonya Harding on Jan 23 (and actually asked real questions as opposed to kissing her ass) and later recapped the events of that evening during the next show on Jan 26...I wish I saved the "Doucheinski & Doyle" media pass they left for them at the MMA event!

D&D - Jan 4, 2010 -- Goodbye again, D&D :-(

Well, so much for that anniversary show tomorrow. D&D are once again unemployed; details are sketchy, but I would assume based on the timing that their contract was not renewed. Greater Media (in my unapologetic, pissed-off opinion) treated them like shit this year, although the guys were professional as always and didn't burn any bridges today. There was barely any advertising outside of WCSX (if any at all) when the year began; Jeff mentioned as recently as last week that a long-time listener (Gay Ken) STILL didn't know they were back on the air in 2009. They show format appeared forced during the majority of the year--as Supersize Scott mentioned over the weekend on the Yahoo Group, the deluge of (sometime really, really uninteresting) interviews at times sucked the life out of the show. The first 2/3 or so of the year seemed to feature an endless conflict between the on-air talent and management about how much music to play on their morning TALK show (no insider knowledge here, btw, just making an ass out of 'umptions). Top-rated Drew and Mike are still around on WCSX's sister station and they seem to get by just fine as a 100% talk show. Even the truncation of the 9am hour back in April didn't resolve this conflict. Also, nothing against Jason Carr or Jamie Samuelsen, but if I wanted sports reports, I would turn on a sports station. Lord knows there are enough of them in Detroit now. The segment lengths got better in the last few months with the less-frequent commercial breaks, but that brought its own round of complaints that the commercials lasted forever. Props to WCSX to letting the guys to a farewell show and air some "Best Of" segments today, but my pissed-off mind is still hoping Greater Media gets their ass handed to them in Lynne Woodson's sexual harassment lawsuit.

I've got a couple predictions (and we'll see if I'm any better at this than Gregg Henson) -- WCSX will switch to all-music morning programming [listening to todays show for the first time right now and HEY I got this one right already! This is a "trend" in morning radio across the country, Doyle just said], and D&D will either find employment within six months or I'm afraid they may be done in radio. "I don't know if we're going to get another show in Detroit or not," Jeff said this morning, adding only partly facetiously, "I don't know if we're ever going to get another show!" Getting canned (or "not getting their contract renewed") twice in just over two years may "blacklist" them (my word, not theirs) and keep them off the air in Detroit for good, so a move to another city is most likely in the cards. They have 10-plus years (fifteen total, Jeff just said) of a experience and a large fan base in Michigan (and New Jersey and maybe Boston) that may help get them into orbit (i.e. satellite radio), but I personally don't really see that happening. Though I would LOVE to hear an uncensored D&D Show, I think their personalities have changed and cooled a bit since their Epic Fine days and I don't know if two married guys with multiple kids each would ever do a "strange sex acts" segment again. As I wrote a couple times already, I'm just now listening to the recording of this morning's show. Sounds like the "divorce" was mutual -- Jeff mentioned that they were given the chance to change the format of the show if they wanted, but in the end, they were a TALK show that didn't truly fit on a music station. "We weren't disc jockeys," I just heard him say, "we never really have been." I never could find the quote, but I know he wrote something along those lines ("I'm not a damn DJ," or something akin to that) on the Yahoo Group back in mid-2008, which is why I found it very strange that November when they announced their hiring by a classic rock station. I've said this on here many times before, but it was very refreshing to listen to a funny talk show that didn't involve politics or (for the most part) sports -- and honestly, I really don't care for the obscenity and vulgarity of Howard Stern, so the PG- and PG-13-eqsue humor of D&D was a good fit for my ears (I've only been a regular listener since about 2005, so I can't speak for what the show was like before that).

Working on the audio right now -- it'll be posted soon, but I wanted to get this up on here just on the off-chance that there are people who come to this blog for their first D&D news of the day. The show will be brought to you commercial-free today as a "Screw You, WCSX" moment -- I know Jeff warned against that, but I'm still bitter from the loss of the 9am hour, so of course I'll still be pissed off about this.

Please keep checking back on this blog over the next couple weeks; not only will we continue to bring you up-to-date D&D news (even if there's no audio to post), but we're going with an idea another D&D fan e-mailed me this morning starting tomorrow.

UPDATE #1: Here's an article up at freep.com, confirming that Ken Calvert will move to mornings and Programming Director Doug Podell will take KC's afternoon slot. Big news is that (according to the Free Press) Jamie and Nicole will be staying with WCSX to do sports and traffic, respectively.

UPDATE #2: Hour 1 now available above; WCSX.com has dropped the link to the D&D section of the website, though the page is still available (for now). No podcasts today, just one new link:

1. DRUNKEST GUY EVER GOES BACK FOR ONE MORE BEER (video) - Drunkest guy ever--watch this video!

UPDATE #3: Hour 2 uploaded. Rumor on Facebook that D&D are "in talks for satillite radio contracts." Also, "decision to end their deal was made several weeks ago," according to Greater Media market manager John Gallagher (who also says he will help D&D find another gig). The Detroit News reports that their contract with Greater Media was for "more than [one] year," so at least their credit card balances won't balloon as quick as it did in 2008. Wonder if WCSX gets off the hook for their contract if and when they get on the air again somewhere? Maybe that's why Gallagher is so high on helping them out. Jay Towers is also out of a job at 97.1 (thank GOD!)...there are many more articles on the web about the D&D / WCSX split; see here, here, here, here, and here. The D&D section of WCSX.com is no more, though their podcasts are still up (for now) [gone now]; they now have info about KC's and Podell's new gigs. Changes go into effect on Jan 11th -- not sure who's going to run the morning show for the rest of this week. Also no word on the future of Jim O'Brien or Rudy.

UPDATE #4: Hour 3 all done and uploaded. I swapped out the commercials for today with some segues I pulled out of old shows, left the intro unedited (didn't add in the listener-made remix), and modified the ending of the show just a tad. There's a new rumor out on the Yahoo Group that Greater Media wanted to move D&D to afternoons on WRIF -- while I'd love to see a format change and the reintroduction of FM-Talk in Detroit, I don't see this happening. John Gallagher already said D&D are "no longer Greater Media employees." Then again, they swapped Jamie Samuelsen from one station to another earlier this year, so we'll just have to wait and see.
