No D&D week of Dec 28, 2009 - Jan 1, 2010

D&D off all week -- as mentioned in the Yahoo group, WCSX isn't even playing Best Of clips, they're just having Dave Doran play music in the mornings. I suppose it makes sense as a predominantly music-oriented station, but it would have been nice to hear some classic clips from the past year. Feel free to browse through the podcast archive using the links on the left. Most days have both the full show audio and links to official podcasts available -- at least since Sept; it appears the podcasts from before the WCSX.com site redesign are no longer available (I have them if anyone wants them).

This was the final "live" D&D Show of the year; not sure if they're going into Best Of for the next week and a half or just music in the mornings. I put "live" in quotation marks on purpose, as this was a pseudo-"Best Of 2009" show -- the guys were mostly live but also played a bunch of memorable clips from the past year. D&D - Dec 22, 2009

Yeah, we left the Christmas songs in. Just trying to provide a counterweight to Doyle's constant Scrooge-ness. Very interesting show today. A few old stories were revisited; Kate Hanni, director of Flyer's Rights was interviewed again, this time about the new anti-stranded-flyer legislation, Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero's possible run for governor inspired a replay of his hilarious FOX News interview from early this year, and Jamie "Too Soon" Samuelsen kept up with the Brittany Murphy jokes. Deminski read aloud the poem he sent out with yesterday's D&D Mail, explained the history of NORAD's Santa Tracker, and the guys took some calls about the sanctity and value of canine life. Other topics included another "_____ of the Decade" list, a mention of an article about the attractiveness of symmetry, and proof that if you try to pick up a married woman at a bar, the screwdriver you end up with might not contain orange juice and vodka. SAMUELSEN ON SPORTS (blog) - Philly Fans Strike Again...Eagle fans have been infamous over the years for booing Santa Claus and for cheering Michael Irvin when he lay motionless on the turf at the Vet. So this is pretty tame...but still pretty funny as they pepper 49er fans with snowballs after the big winter storm hit over the weekend. The poor dudes had to be escorted out of the stadium because they had the gall to get pelted by snowballs.

We had a bit of TV & movie news on this morning's show -- the Survivor finale was discussed while calls were taken regarding Avatar and young dead celebrities (Jamie was a hilarious hardass during this segment). There were two large segments and a ton of small ones on today's show that didn't end up on the website. An interview with local limo company owner Pat Mifsud and a long call-in segment about classic rock Christmas songs occurred during the first half of the show. The minor topics addressed included (in reverse chronological order) the 2010 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees, a story about taking your dog to have its picture taken with Santa, stupid calls to an animal protection hotline, an extremely funny letter Deminski found on Craigslist's Missed Connections, a quiz about TIME Magazine's Person of the Year, another holiday tipping guide, some audio from a news clip about a drunk Santa, the flooding at the IKEA in Canton, and a Newsweek blurb about minor presidential secrets. We had another one of those over-the-air / webstream ad mixup days, so all the infomercials were gone today and replaced by the same ads we heard over the air. D&D are both back today, catching up on current events. Jeff's daughter is doing well -- good to hear. Tiger Woods and his "wood" featured heavily on today show, as did Meridith Baxter and her apathy towards wood (great segment on Shocking Closeted Celebrities in the 6am hour). There were also several local stories; Martha Reeves threw herself a going-away party (Sarah Palin, it's your turn), former FOX 2 anchor Fanchon Stinger is (in my opinion) trying to launch a comeback, and some Detroit chick who got burned by her man decided to burn back. One more day of the JJ&N Show. Highlight of the day was the Tiger Woods voicemail. Can't wait to hear Jeff & Bill's reactions tomorrow. Sad that this is what sports news has turned into; Aaron Sorkin foreshadowed it more than ten years ago in an episode of Sports Night:

"Look, I got into [sports journalism] 'cause I liked getting people to like sports. And I've turned into a P.R. man for punks and thugs. Any atrocity, no matter how ridiculous or hideous or childish, it doesn't matter. I make it sports. Ten cent bag man whacks a skater's leg with a crow bar, that's sports. Second round draft pick gets cranky in a Houston bar and that's sports. And let's not forget the mother of all great sports stories -- a double homicide in Brentwood."
