D&D - WXYT - Nov 9, 2007

I listened to a bit of Drew & Mike this morning and heard about WXYZ's firing of investigative reporter Steve Wilson. Some of his stories were Emmy-caliber (the whole Kwame scandal), while some of them were conspiracy-theory, wingnut-style crazy (the anti-vaccine movement). Traditional media is a tough, tough job these days; network TV has cable channels and Hulu to compete with, the local news has the Internet and 24-hour news channels stealing their ratings, newspapers basically feature yesterday's news when compared to their online counterparts, and terrestrial radio has satellite and Internet radio spelling its doom. Notice a common theme here? The Internet is the future model for all media, IMHO.

Anyway, back to D&D. Man, Jeff's blog has been awfully quiet the last couple weeks. Perhaps he's doing the "traveling" he mentioned? We heard from "a guy who knows a guy" that there's a better-than-50/50 chance D&D end up broadcasting from outside of Michigan and most likely it'll be a major market. It'd probably be a safe bet that Rudy & Nicole -- who both grew up in Michigan -- would not make that trek. Other than Beaver, Rudy has the longest tenure of any of the "supporting cast." Today's featured show, 11/9/2007, was actually available online a couple years ago via BitTorrent. The audio below is "remastered" from an original recording, just like the other 97.1 shows we've been featuring lately, and not from the torrent capture. The Friday Game was one of the best ever -- "Because Rudy's Gay" was basically just a way to replay all the out-of-context gay Rudy drops Doyle had collected over time. There was also an earlier call-in segment about whether flirting with a butch lesbian makes you gay as well as another round of the Lions' game, "Complete the Call."

Other topics covered included some 97.1 history, a bit about Conan O'Brien's priest stalker, celebrities who have been banned from SNL, and a little blurb about chess boxing. There were a ton of interviews during this show as well -- D&D chatted with Dan the Dump Guy about a "headless corpse" (this was the beginning of the J.P. Orlewicz case), Shawn Kosofsky from the Triangle Foundation gave his opinion on the aftermath of the Larry Craig fiasco, comic Jimmy Dore stopped by the studio to plug his Ann Arbor Comedy show, and Max Brooks (son of Mel) called in to plug his Zombie book.

D&D - WXYT - Nov 7, 2007

Realizing the probable impending demise of the D&D Show, Rudy gave an on-air audition for Logo's new "Gay News." It was a dish of Epic Fail with a side of foreshadowing in the form of a shout-out to Jason Carr. The guys later played a classic afternoon game, "Human Scavenger Hunt." I had forgotten about a lot of their 97.1 segments -- there were a lot of things that just never made the transition to WCSX. Other topics from this show included a call-in segment about the "Male Roe v. Wade" court decision, interviews with Castoff Jamie from Survivor: China and Peter Moore from Men's Health about nasty hotel rooms, a quick chat with Dan the Dump Guy, an update to the Dog the Racist Bounty Hunter story, a Rudy vs. Nicole sex quiz, as well as debates about Michigan's voter ID laws, deep fried crap, fungus sex, and wedgie-proof underwear.

D&D - WXYT - Nov 6, 2007

Perhaps the on-air bragging during the previous day's show wasn't the start of the Lions curse, maybe it was the birth of "The Ticket" name that occurred during on November 6, 2007. And what was the first ever live sporting event on "The Ticket?" A round of Beer Pong featuring Rudy and Beaver. Videos of this event are still available on YouTube here and here. Call-in segments from this show included a pondering from Jeff about hunting albino deer, submission of opinions about gay PDAs (not the palm pilot kind), nominations for the worst Christmas songs, and a barely restrained Deminski arguing with a Jehovah's Witness about blood transfusions. Other topics included creepy David Copperfield stagehand rules about hot chicks, a DeathPool Dave Christmas letter to WNIC, a bit about the then-upcoming writers' strike, the prohibition of Playboy and Penthouse in the military, and a self-deprecating Jewish student at GWU.

D&D - WXYT - Nov 5, 2007

Local news anchor Lee Thomas joined D&D in studio during the 9am hour during this show to talk about his vitiligo and his book, "Turning White." I laughed at Jeff's earlier story about how Lee almost blew him off thinking he was a "nobody." Heh, more foreshadowing? Welcome to the world of unemployment, Jeff. ;) Classic segments from this show included a couple call-in segments about SuperSize's "glory days" and the then-overachieving (6-2) Detroit Lions. Perhaps D&D getting screwed (twice) put a curse on the team? They've been what, 3-37 since this show? Other topics discussed ranged from a recap of the "Ultimate Hike For a Cure" guy, a Steve Wilson / Star Jones FAIL interview, a list of 101 "gadgets that changed the world," more Kwame news, and "movies that defined your generation" to a couple Rudy-centric segments (Rock Star mugshot trivia and "Rudy drop history"). We also learned that the youth of America now favor social networking sites to porn...what have we come to?

D&D - WXYT - Nov 1, 2007

More foreshadowing during this show -- D&D commented on the new classic rock "beds" (post-commercial intro music). There were a few call-in segments during this show; listeners proposed slang nicknames, played a round of Red Wings Thursday, told stories about attempting to sell their houses in Michigan, and recounted their 21st birthdays (this segment gave the classic Rudy "tappin' Wolf on the way home" drop). Other topics included an interview with the "Piece of Shea" guy, a list of the top five scariest video games, an audio clip from (and a discussion about) the Dog the Bounty Hunter / N-word controversy, a bit about Heather Mills, an inquiry about cheating on drug tests, and a winning lawsuit against the Westboro Baptist Church.

D&D - WXYT - Oct 25, 2007

I'm not sure if this was the last live show before Halloween--I don't think it was--but it is the last one from October 2007 that we have audio of. A very large part of it (multiple segments' worth) consisted of a March-Madness style Horror Movie bracket competition drawn up by Jeff and voted on by listeners. Keeping with the topic, D&D chatted with Livonia resident Mark Kinney about his "illegal" Halloween decorations and Hana Lee and Jay the Cable guy later told of their personal experiences with ghosts. Rudy also sought advise about parishioner-priest confidentiality in regards to murder. Other topics included a debate about dressing up pets, the latest Borat lawsuit, an audio clip from a chick peeing herself on The Price is Right (YouTube disagrees), Condi Rice's experiences with Code Pink, and a new club for fatties. The interview with Holly West, contestant from "America's Next Top Porn Star," was conducted during the "lost" 9 o'clock Hour, but here is the podcast of the interview from WXYT's website.

D&D - WXYT - Oct 24, 2007

This was a rare interview-laden 97.1 show. Local filmmakers Matt Schuelman & Ryan V. Meade chatted with the guys about their then-new film "100 Miles to Midnight" (no IMDB listing), former D&D NJ 101.5 Program Director Perry Michael Simon popped on the air to chat about the California wildfires, and Anthony Zuiker, creator of hit TV show CSI, spoke to D&D about his CSI / Second Life crossover. Nicole Salem was also "interviewed" around 8:30. Other segments included a proposed World Series bet, a discussion about sports superstitions, a stupid sappy "sincere" birthday message to Hillary Clinton from Bill, some Australian boob news, a list of the top "germiest" spots you encounter, and a couple call-in segments about Criss Angel and mancaves.

P.S. Found a couple interesting recent article that mention Deminski & Doyle (if just in passing). Art Vuolo, someone D&D are personally familiar with, wrote an article about the dearth of FM Talk in Detroit that included a couple paragraphs about Jeff & Bill. Here's a key quote:

Bill Doyle and Jeff Deminski were two of the more popular personalities to work on FM talk radio locally, but 2009 was not a good year for the duo while at classic rocker WCSX-FM (94.7). It wasn't a good fit. It was the wrong station...D&D built their largest fan-base as an afternoon drive program at WKRK and didn't like it when they were pushed into mornings, as the station began to evolve as an all-sports outlet. This is unfortunate because Deminski & Doyle are very good and they like Detroit. Hopefully some under-performing FM station will adapt a talk format and make them their first hire for afternoons. (Emphasis mine)

I never considered a possible format flip to talk for a station in Detroit, but I don't see why it's not at least plausible. Here's an article that ponders if the lack of personalities on FM is a result of the controversial Arbitron PPM device used to measure ratings.

D&D - WXYT - Oct 23, 2007

Comedian J. Chris Newberg made his first appearance on the D&D show back on October 23, 2007. Deathpool Dave also stopped by the studio to chat about his then-new book and CD and the guys later interviewed Mike Richards, host of Beauty and the Geek. Other topics included a rape debate with Nicole, Marie Osmond's wipeout on Dancing With the Stars, an on-air demonstration of "mosquito" ringtones (that didn't translate to MP3 very well), audio clips of a 911 call of a kid ratting out his drunk driving mom, and a survey to see what you can tell about a women by her drink.

D&D - WXYT - Oct 22, 2007

There was a great "Zombie Walker" interview in this show; gotta love when the guys would touch on sci-fi or the supernatural, Doyle was always such a skeptic and a cynic. He also got a chance to rip on some "ghost photos" towards the end of the show. There weren't any other interviews, but Rudy told a story about his horrible tech support experience and Beaver recalled a time when he wore another man's pants at a baseball game. Other segments included an Australian ear-booger-eating politician, clips of presidential candidate Stephen Colbert being interviewed by Tim Russert and 9/11 Truther hecklers on Bill Maher's show, and a monkey attack in New Dehli. There were also call-in segments about scalping, Van Halen, extreme commuting, and suspected gay characters in movies.

D&D - WXYT - Oct 19, 2007

I miss the Friday Games. This show featured the first ever morning-show version of Outburst. Come to think of it, I miss Beaver as well. Nothing again Jim O'Brien, but he was too happy (perhaps "jolly"?) -- Beaver was often unintentionally funny when he got pissed off about something. Other segments in today's featured show included a chat with comedian (and former
Magic Johnson Show co-host) Craig Shoemaker, a list of movie misquotes from FARK, an update on Kwame's whistleblower case, an interview with David Binkley, a lawyer involved in the Oakland County Child Murders from the 70's, a flatulent WXYT announer outtake, a chance to get free beer for life in New Zealand, and a long interview with legendary Motown songwriters Eddie and Brian Holland -- maybe this was a WCSX audition in disguise? There were also a couple other call-in segments about height discrimination for guys and a Lions ticket giveaway.

P.S. On to other news...according to my sources, Jeff and Bill are definitely sticking together as a team and are exploring their options both in-state and out-of-state. Unfortunately, I was told there's a 2-to-1 or better chance that the next incarnation of the Deminski & Doyle Show will not be based in Detroit. :( Hopefully it's either satellite radio or a station in a big market (Los Angeles, maybe?) that has a good quality online stream and podcasts.

D&D - WXYT - Oct 18, 2007

This show featured a classic D&D game that didn't make the transition to WCSX, the "Red Wings Thursday." Maybe because Jim O'Brien, unlike Beaver, was actually GOOD as impressions. There were more Sweetest Day roses given away as well, using the same methodology as the previous show. Other segments included a little bit of political talk about the 2008 election, interviews with author George Cantor (about his Bo Schembechler book) and the owner of a Florida strip club that offers flu shots, a Nicole Salem current events quiz, a couple short discussions about stupid things people want when they die and the "Down Low," and a D&D CLASSIC bit featuring SuperSize Scott and his cyst. D&D - WXYT - Oct 17, 2007

I flipped on WRIF this morning to see catch the latest porn review or sex robot prank call from Drew and Mike, and what came on instead? A "doghouse" contest for free flowers for Valentine's Day. Yeah, I know it's probably a radio show staple, but it's ironic that the D&D show featured today included the EXACT SAME contest, only for Sweetest Day. And the D&D callers weren't quite as retarded. Also, listen about 4:15 into Hour 4 for a very old shout out to "D&D bonus points." Other listener interaction segments from Oct 17, '07 included opinions on bumper stickers / car art and callers bragging about the most food they had eaten at one sitting. The latter topic was inspired by an on-air challenge to Rudy to see if he could eat six giant Breakfast Burritos from Hardee's in under an hour. Other topics covered included a call to SuperSize Scott in response to a cell photo photo he sent to Jeff of his nipple cyst, Deminski's opinion of tailgating, some Larry Craig clips and jokes, audio of Ellen Degeneris' doggie meltdown, and a list of the top "spookiest" jobs.

D&D - WXYT - Oct 16, 2007

Listening back, it seems like D&D brought a lot of their old sponsors from 97.1 with them to WCSX (Snookers / Mr. Joe's, F.R.E.D., Direct Optical, etc). Hopefully those contacts are something that Jeff and Bill can use as leverage to find another local gig. Anyone hear anything from Jeff at the meet-ups about the future of the show?

Anyway...topics from the show below include an attempted interview with a Massachusetts witch, another eerie foreshadowing story about Jay & Conan, a fat guy who used his flab as a life-saving device, a short quip about a drunk who accidentally drank blood, Drew Carey's first day on The Price is Right, stupid Country song titles, and funny audio from a snake-biting incident from a National Geographic TV show. Listeners chimed in on discussions about sexy news anchors, the value of your pet vs. your car, and various overrated things. There was also a classic, long call-in segment about the best stoner movies, movie characters, music, and food, inspired by High Times' "Stony Awards".

D&D - WXYT - Oct 15, 2007

It's always interesting to listen to older versions of news stories. D&D interviewed Mike Helms, a former military guy who was a civilian contractor in Iraq -- when he was hurt, the DoD and VA refused to pay for any of his medical bills. I couldn't find any updates to his story online (he actually has the same name as a former Oakland University star basketball player) but I'd be interested to see what happened to him. The guys also brought up the very beginning of the John Edwards scandal, back when it was just National Enquirer fodder (incidentally, the Nation Enquirer was just recently denied a Pulitzer Prize on a technicality). Other segments from this show included a couple "dumbass of the day" stories (Nicole's broken gaydar and a guy from Match.com whose douchebaggery went viral), a debate on a Good Samaritan law, a call to Jay the Cable Guy about his WWE experience at The Joe, an chat with Marissa (some chick from Deal or No Deal), and a long in-studio interview with Livonia native Lindsay from The Bachelor. There were also call-in segments about James Bond actors, having sex with robots, and the antiquated idea of asking a father's permission to marry his daughter.

D&D - WXYT - Oct 12, 2007

Even towards the end, the shows at 97.1 flowed a lot better then anything they ever did at WCSX. Beaver's sports reports only started when the station flipped format in October, 2007 and they were about 1/4 of the length of Jason Carr's or Jamie Samuelsen's (and WXYT was a SPORTS station). The show also usually had that "extra" 4th hour -- except when they went off the air early or started late in the afternoons due to a Tigers game. Topics from this show included interviews with two authors -- David Earthman, who compiled "E-mails From Hell," and Sandy Lions, local author of "Michigan's Most Haunted" -- a discussion about old TV theme songs, and a bunch of call-in segments (a list of suggestions from the guys and callers about euphemisms for being drunk, a classic Jeff vs. caller argument about Kwame, memories about stupid games we played as kids as well as "redneck sports"). It seems like these old WKRK / WXYT shows contain less interviews as well, maybe only 1-2 per show.

D&D - WXYT - Oct 10, 2007

This was a pretty full show for a Hump day. Rudy and Nicole squared off in a sex quiz (her "favorite kind"), Bill D. and Bill T. took on the reigning Rock-Paper-Scissors champion, and the guys discuss Tia Tequila's new reality dating show and go over a top ten infomercials list. Also, Jay the Cable Guy popped (not pooped) on the air to talk about his WWE wrestling experience at The Joe, callers chimed in when Jeff brought up his resistance to getting a vasectomy, and we find out that Rudy's on-air marriage of two callers may have been an EPIC FAIL.

D&D - WXYT - Oct 9, 2007

Sorry about the lack of an update yesterday; got a little behind in the "remastering" process. "Today's" show features a trivia contest between Beaver and Rudy regarding the "Best Breasts in Movies," a short but informative discussion about Eric Prince and Blackwater, an interview with CBS's Rob Milford about Iraq (remember, this is 2007), a segment about "pooper scooper" companies (love the Workforce Business of the Day foreshadowing!), and an AWESOMELY FUNNY call to "Dan the Dump Guy" about a dead minister with a rubber fetish. There was also the SuperSize Scott vs. Hana Lee car experiment mentioned during the previous day's show.

D&D - WXYT - Oct 8, 2007

Jeff and Bill started their second week on mornings in October, 2007 still trying to get adjusted to the new schedule. They replayed the prank phone call Mike Stanley did to Jeff's horny Aunt Marty from the previous week early in the show. Other topics included a discussion about e-mail scams and gullibility, a list of the best guitar riffs (foreshadowing, eh?), a segment on Bruce Springsteen (surprise, surprise), and an e-mail from a listener containing a sexual moral dilemma. They also played a couple drunken voicemails from Nicole and Hana Lee, which led into preparations for an roadside "experiment" with Hana Lee and Supersize Scott.

D&D - old news items

Here's a neat (though short) article from the New York Daily News about D&D's move from New Jersey to Detroit in August of 1999:

WKXW's Jeff Deminski and Bill Doyle hit the Motor City air on Aug. 23, joining a station whose lineup includes both Howard Stern in the morning and Mancow Muller on tape-delay in the overnight.

Jeff and Bill seemed to be little troublemakers in New Jersey from what we can find:

- From the NYDN again, the guys got sued for making fun of a NJ Turnpike Authority spokeswoman...
- Another NYDN article states how Jeff was sued for calling a Philadelphia DJ a "lesbian cowgirl"...
- Jeff and Bill, like other hosts on WKXW, seemed to often rail against politicians...
- This is post-NJ, but the Central Michigan University newspaper objected to D&D's use of gay slurs shortly after they arrived in Detroit in the fall of 1999...
- And of course there was the famous FCC fine show back in 2002...from what I've heard, the tone of the show seemed to calm down after that incident...

UPDATE: Lest we not forget the Secret Service investigation of D&D during Clinton's impeachment...

D&D - WXYT - Oct 4, 2007

We wouldn't be doing anything on here right now without contributions from other listeners. Thanks again to the "Cousin from Jersey" for the last couple weeks' worth of segments. For the next little while, we're going to be featuring most of the shows from D&D's time with WXYT (97.1 post-format change) from October - December 2007. Props go out to a listener who was in a situation I know quite well; when D&D switched to mornings in October, 2007, many afternoon listeners found themselves unable to listen due to the fact they were still in bed at 6am. One listener did the same thing we did when we started this blog -- he recorded the shows and listened to them later in the day. Thanks to the wonderful phenomenon of digital hoarding (and audio cleanup tools), here they are, commercial and (mostly) static free!

The first show is actually their third show on mornings; classic highlights from this show include an EPIC FAIL when Cletus attempts to visit Jay the Cable Guy's house at 6am and some scripture from Leviticus that was "too hot for radio."
