D&D - WXYT - Nov 9, 2007

I listened to a bit of Drew & Mike this morning and heard about WXYZ's firing of investigative reporter Steve Wilson. Some of his stories were Emmy-caliber (the whole Kwame scandal), while some of them were conspiracy-theory, wingnut-style crazy (the anti-vaccine movement). Traditional media is a tough, tough job these days; network TV has cable channels and Hulu to compete with, the local news has the Internet and 24-hour news channels stealing their ratings, newspapers basically feature yesterday's news when compared to their online counterparts, and terrestrial radio has satellite and Internet radio spelling its doom. Notice a common theme here? The Internet is the future model for all media, IMHO.

Anyway, back to D&D. Man, Jeff's blog has been awfully quiet the last couple weeks. Perhaps he's doing the "traveling" he mentioned? We heard from "a guy who knows a guy" that there's a better-than-50/50 chance D&D end up broadcasting from outside of Michigan and most likely it'll be a major market. It'd probably be a safe bet that Rudy & Nicole -- who both grew up in Michigan -- would not make that trek. Other than Beaver, Rudy has the longest tenure of any of the "supporting cast." Today's featured show, 11/9/2007, was actually available online a couple years ago via BitTorrent. The audio below is "remastered" from an original recording, just like the other 97.1 shows we've been featuring lately, and not from the torrent capture. The Friday Game was one of the best ever -- "Because Rudy's Gay" was basically just a way to replay all the out-of-context gay Rudy drops Doyle had collected over time. There was also an earlier call-in segment about whether flirting with a butch lesbian makes you gay as well as another round of the Lions' game, "Complete the Call."

Other topics covered included some 97.1 history, a bit about Conan O'Brien's priest stalker, celebrities who have been banned from SNL, and a little blurb about chess boxing. There were a ton of interviews during this show as well -- D&D chatted with Dan the Dump Guy about a "headless corpse" (this was the beginning of the J.P. Orlewicz case), Shawn Kosofsky from the Triangle Foundation gave his opinion on the aftermath of the Larry Craig fiasco, comic Jimmy Dore stopped by the studio to plug his Ann Arbor Comedy show, and Max Brooks (son of Mel) called in to plug his Zombie book.

Here's the show:
