D&D - June 4, 2005 (Wing Cup V)

A couple days late with this post, but better late than never...thanks to "The Falconator," this weekend's surprise is WING CUP V! Live from Snookers Bar & Grille in Utica, MI, this was the final year of D&D's annual chicken eating contest. NJ-101.5 listeners might not recognize the now-serious duo -- they let their comedy side shine much more often at WKRK. Also present was call screener Rudy DeSantis as "Puke Bucket Boy," producer Beaver (A.K.A. Bill T.) as "The Chicken Man," and previous two-time WingCup champion and friend of the show "Wingasauras" as the celebrity judge.

UPDATE: Does anyone have any photos from this event? I was there but didn't have a camera at the time. There are some pictures on the web from Wing Cup III in 2003 here and here.

Final D&D show until after the New Year. Not sure if they're planning on coming back on Monday the 2nd or Tuesday the 3rd, but either way, we'll be here too. We've got good news and bad news about the 5pm hour from today. The bad news is there was a webstream outage (on all of our sources) from about 5:30 (just before the new mid-hour newsbreak) until about 5:50 (during a commercial break), so there's about 15 minutes of "show" missing. We recorded the "D&D Rewind" that airs from 3am-5am, but the 5pm hour was not reaired. BUT DO NOT DESPAIR! The good news is audio stream came back online just before the debut of the 2011 version of the "12 Days in Jersey" song -- download it by itself here!

The issue of lifetime alimony is slowing becoming the final "link" in the Triforce of Conservatism on the D&D show. Though Jeff and Bill are usually pretty politically centrist, even liberal on some issues (gay marriage, medical marijuana, the auto bailout, etc), it seemes like illegal immigration, teacher tenure (also discussed today), and alimony are going to be brought up on "Deminski & Doyle 3.0" over and over again, especially with the anti-alimony laws that are coming up in Jersey. While on its face, it may seems like an equal rights argument -- Jeff mentioned over and over about how he thinks alimony laws treat women as second-class citizens or whatever phrase he used -- much like affirmative action, they wouldn't be necessary if there truly was a level playing field for women today. As we noted before, while they were in Michigan, political segments were rarer than an hour without a "gay Rudy" joke, D&D seem to be rekindling their niche for controversial topics that they had before at NJ1015 in the 90's. Not that it's a bad thing -- heated arguments are entertaining, as long as they're not always on the same side of the fence on every topic and as long as they don't cut people's mics like O'Rielly or sling insults like Limbaugh or Beck.

Other topics from today's show included a look at Toygaroo.com, a Netflix-for-toys company, another discussion on outdated technology, and a second look at the debate over the lack of African-American state troopers in Jersey.

There were a few noteworthy moments in today's show we'd like to highlight. It seems that Jeff and Bill are settling in, reacquainting themselves with NJ 101.5, and getting more comfortable bringing in some of their more comedic elements into the show. Not only was the story about the San Diego Chargers kicker who (apparently!) took a leak on national television (video link here) the genesis for the entire 5:00 hour, but it was mentioned briefly several other times during the show, including at the very start of the 2pm hour (audio link here -- super bonus points for anyone who can identify where the last 20 seconds of this came from!). There was also a mention of the dearth of D&D swag available (audio link here) -- anyone have an extra D&D WKRK pinup calendar, any Wing Cup memorabilia, or a mid-90's WKXW Jeff Deminski photo card (collect them all!) they'd be willing to spare for a new listener? :)

Another interesting point of note about those two short audio clips linked above. Doyle mentions in the first one the inability to verify a listener's question about a show from the previous week, as the station "doesn't record anything here," but yet during the discussion about the D&D Christmas gift ideas, the e-mailer (Mike) states that he "started listening to podcasts of [D&D] and quickly became a fan." Nobody noticed that paradox? Heh...

Anyway...topics from today included a recap of Black Friday madness, a debate about a NJ proposal to allow Skype-esque webchat between prison inmates and family members, callers' experiences with "Club D'oh!" (i.e. crashing-into-deer stories), the aforementioned "peeing in public" segment, and a discussion on hearing loss.

Shouldn't complain too much, it's a short week this week -- assuming D&D are having a short week as well, but we haven't heard any concrete news about their schedule. Thursday, November 17 is the #OWS International Day of Action -- the revolution continues worldwide!

Topics for today included a proposed post-Sandusky bill from Senator Menendez (D-NJ), the Community Alcohol Regulatory Effectiveness Child Abuse Reporting Enforcement (CARE) Act, a poll of listeners on experiences with scammers, a discussion about state workers' "Accidental Disability" pensions, another hour on medical marijuana, an an update on the girl who was suspended for wearing the Stars & Bars to school.

Also, if you listen to nothing else, listen to the first ten minutes or so of Hour 1 from today; it was probably the funniest opening segment Jeff & Bill since they went back on the air at NJ 101.5. The idea that Jeff Deminski is "unbalanced" and the "lukey warm air" quip had me rolling. Seriously, I think there should be an hour a week called "Talking About Deminski's Problems." It's pretty obvious sometimes that he's a former standup comic.

P.S. A Detroit listener recently posted a proposal to the D&D Yahoo Group to try to bring Jeff & Bill back to Detroit. I don't see it happening -- they're back "home" in Jersey, as they both have said, there isn't a market for non-political or sports talk in Detroit, and I don't see them taking a job on another music station -- but it did get a comment from Jeff on Facebook. I hope the guys realize that, no, maybe they never reached Drew & Mike-level popularity in Detroit, but they were on the air here at WKRK/WXYT for eight years (and another year at WCSX) and they have a ton of former listeners, fan, and friends here in the "D."

Video Flashback: December, 2007 - The Chocolate Milk Pong Challenge

This is from the show's last days at 97.1, and one of the few I've been able to find online featuring the classic Detroit lineup of Deminski, Doyle, phone screener Rudy DeSantis (wearing his ever present Jäger hat)and Beaver (better known to old-time Jersey listeners as "Bill T").

The station had just flipped their format to an "All Sports" channel, and a few local listeners called the guys up looking for sponsors for their Beer Pong team in order to make it to a national tournament in Las Vegas. So why not launch Detroit's FM Sports Station with a round of Beer Pong against Rudy and The Beav?
Of course Beaver, being the staunch non-drinker he is, wussed out by refusing to chug beer in the morning, so he insisted on substituting the beer with chocolate milk.

Wow. Three hours spent on one non-weather emergency related topic -- and it wasn't even a New Jersey story? Wasn't even a Philadelphia story...Penn State is in the "Alabama" section of Pennsylvania, dead center in the middle of the state. Such a sad story, but it does continue a two-day streak of "famous child molester" segments after the Michael Jackson / Conrad Murray topic yesterday. Maybe Gary Glitter is next up tomorrow? Other topics covered included an opening segment on Drowsy Driving Awareness Week and an hour of debate on the worthiness of graphic cigarette pack warning labels.

NOTE: There were some technical glitches between about 4:45pm and about 5:15pm. The final section of the 4:00 hour was patched in from the overnight reair, but the first few minutes of Hour 4 (after the news clip) were lost.

Michael Jackson was repeatedly found not guilty, but the "little fish in a big, dirty pond" is most likely going to jail. D&D only spent a half hour on this topic -- and that was just to gauge the level of interest. Other topics covered included callers' stories about finding deer in unexpected places after one was trapped in a local mall, another segment on the too-strict pedestrian rights laws in Jersey, a half hour on proposed fines for drivers stranded on flooded roads after moving or ignoring warning signs, a ton of (understandable) listener complaints about possible rate hikes from local utility companies who were hit hard by recent storms, and yet another story about a new proposed law, this one banning first responders from taking and sharing unauthorized crime scene photos.
