D&D - May 29, 2009

Are the Red Wings the best sports team in Detroit? Doesn't seem like a tough question to me. They will soon have more championships (currently have 11) than the Pistons (3), Lions (4), and Tigers (4) combined. The Tigers were horrible until the last few years, the Lions still are, and the Pistons don't even play their games in Detroit!

Random NHL trivia time:

A) Which current NHL franchise is the only team that has relocated at least once but has never won a Stanley Cup? (ownership / name changes do not count -- e.g. Detroit Cougars/Red Wings)

Go Wings! First Stanley Cup Finals rematch since 1984 -- let's hope for the first back-to-back beatings of the same team since 1978. Wings talk dominated most of today's show, but there were a few other topics discussed as well, including Nicole's pending oral surgery, an Angel Dog, an interview with Rod Meloni regarding the auto industry's continued woes (all during the 6 o'clock hour) as well as a (possibly management-provided) call-in segment about positive vibe classic rock mixtapes (around 7:20 or so). I know I've said this before, but I'm so glad the Deminski & Doyle show is a secular, non-political, non-sports show. Couldn't turn on a TV yesterday without seeing something about Proposition 8 or Sonia Sotomoyor. And there wasn't even a Wings game to turn on instead. They'd better win tonight -- NBC's selfishness would push the start of the Cup Finals to June 5 otherwise. A week and a half off? What is this, the Superbowl Big Game? D&D - May 26, 2009

No show yesterday due to the holiday. Anyone want a recording of 3-4 hours of classic rock from yesterday morning? Then again, no -- we should still be boycotting them for truncating the D&D show. The least they could have done was to make a Best Of show. I guess this sets the precedent for future D&D vacation days. (podcast) - Nevaeh Buchanan, 5 was last seen Sunday evening with her mother's boyfriend - who sources say is a registered sex offender that has a court order to stay away from children. Neveah's mother told authorities that she KNEW her boyfriend's sex offender status. This begs the question - why would the mother of a 5 year old date a registered sex offender who has been ordered to stay away from kids under 17?
4. WINGS TICKETS (Wikipedia) - D&D rounded up some contestants for tomorrow's Red Wings tickets contest - Ken Daniels will call play-by-play while listeners try to score on Rudy (with a puck).

I can honestly say that I've never experienced the "Kevin James Syndrome" during my dating life (here's a link to the Love Letter to Out-Sized Males article D&D mentioned). My current significant other has a predilection for geeky and bald guys (check and check), but she was never necessarily predisposed to fat guys. Where were the hot chubby chasing college girls when I was 18? 4. McG - DIRECTOR OF TERMINATOR SALVATION (podcast) - D&D talked to Joseph McGinty Nichol - better known as McG. McG, who was born in Kalamazoo Michigan, is the director of Terminator Salvation, which is in theaters now.
5. JOHN SALLEY (podcast) - Former Detroit Piston John Salley called in to talk about the passing of Chuck Daly and his new reality TV gig on "I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here."
6. KIDS ON LEASHES (podcast) - D&D found a hilarious website with pictures of kids on leashes. Is it sometimes necessary for your child's safety to keep them on a leash in crowded places? Or is it a mean way of treating your child like a dog? Nicole Salem even has her own input on leashes. Apparently, Mr. and Mrs. Salem were worried by their ditzy (even then) toddler's tendancy to wander off', so they put her on a leash! This explains so much.

A co-worker asked me earlier today, "Why are you so mean?" My response was, "Because it's not Friday yet. It's not even Friday-eve." Also, people are stupid (see my customers and #2 below). And now to blow off some steam, I'm going to go play stupid mind-numbing online web games. Here's some info from this morning's show, thanks (mostly) to WCSX.com:

1. I DRIVE WHAT I BUILD (video) - A listener, Mitchell J. Rickey wrote a really cool song called "I Drive What I Build." Take a listen to this great song!

RELIGIOUS WHACKJOB PARENTS (article) - D&D discussed (and took some calls) about the sad case in Minnesota where a 13-year-old boy with cancer is being kept from treatment by his parents' new-age religion. This kid (who has a learning disability to go along with his cancer) was brainwashed by his idiot parents to think that modern medicine is going to kill him...and now the crazy mom kidnapped her son to keep him from Satan's chemo after a court ruled that she basically couldn't force him to die. "Abuse by medical neglect," to quote the court ruling. No shit.
3. JEFF'S DOG GEORGE (podcast) - Things are not well in the Deminski household. The family dog, George, has bad breath caused by gingivitis. Now poor George needs his teeth surgically cleaned, because mom and dad didn't teach him proper oral hygiene!
4. LEE THOMAS (podcast) - Lee Thomas, Fox 2's very own "American Idol Correspondent," called in for some "Idol" chit chat with the guys. Who do you think will be announced the winner tonight? Lee has his opinion!
5. JOHN RATZENBERGER (podcast) - Today D&D talked to John Ratzenberger - you know him as "Cliff Clavin" on Cheers. Ratzenberger has also had a role in EVERY single movie made by Pixar Studios.
6. BUY AMERICAN...OR LOSE YOUR JOB? (podcast) - The Mayor of Warren wants to make it mandatory that ALL city employees must buy American cars. Do you agree? Or as Americans, should we have the freedom to chose what we buy?
7. CHRIS CHELIOS (podcast) - Two down and two to go!! D&D caught up with Chris Chelios to talk Red Wings hockey - and of course get the scoop on game 3 against the Chicago Blackhawks.

D&D - May 15, 2009

Best thing, in my opinion, about the Faces Not Numbers campaign? Deminski and Doyle have perhaps the only show that could bring together a bipartisan collection of politicians and decision makers from Michigan and DC -- and without once mentioning anybody's political affiliation. Good for them. Hopefully it has some kind of effect on those who will make these decisions. And we're not just talking about Congress and the White House. GM is closing over 1,000 American dealerships, closing factories left and right, then turning around and importing over 50,000 cars from China per year within five years. Doesn't quite seem like the right way to do it, eh? Here are some other topics discussed on today's show, courtesy of WCSX.com:

D&D - May 13, 2009

Deminski and Doyle (and, depending on the budget I'm sure, possibly Jim, Jason, Rudy, and/or Nicole) are on their way to D.C. for their live show and Faces Not Number banner unveiling tomorrow. In the shadow of possible bankruptcy for GM and Chrysler, here's hoping the Obama administration takes notice that there are actually faces that correspond to the hundreds of thousands of jobs lost in this country every month. Michigan leads or is in the "top" ten of the rankings when it comes to foreclosures and unemployment. There has to be a better route towards profitability than slashing jobs and closing dealerships. Why do companies, some that are 100 years old or more, set themselves up for failure if they have a bad year or three? Then again, I'm wasn't a business major, so I'm probably just talking out of my ass. Hopefully the economy turns around soon. Then again, here's a graph showing the ratio of job seekers to job openings:

D&D - May 12, 2009

The webstream is acting a little buggy again the last few days. If you notice truncated audio right before commercial breaks or choppy segues, know that there isn't anything more than a second or so missing -- whoever is producing the stream is going to commercial a few seconds too early and chopping off the WCSX "going-to-commercial" segues. And the percentage of infomercials during the breaks is much higher again. If anyone is able to actually record an over-the-air broadcast, please let me know, as having multiple sources would always be a good thing. Knock on wood, but we haven't had any major problems with the webstream since the show started in January.

I found a couple strange news stories not mentioned (as far as I know) on D&D today. In Otsego (between Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids), a man "accidentally" killed his wife with a chainsaw. Scarface approves. And a "trolley" operator (a trolley? really? *coughgaygough*) in Boston crashed his train while texting -- yes, it happened again. Ridley and Tony Scott (Numb3rs) wonder if they will have to record another PSA. Best segment from today's show (it should have been podcasted) was a bit past 7am, the "Battle of the Nerds." In his defense, Doyle says he doesn't do that anymore. So, does anyone else out there have a pet that they truly dislike?
6. USING MACE ON A DOG? (podcast) - Jeff's friend was horrified to come outside of his home and find a DTE meter reader spraying his Jack Russel Terriers with mace. Should the meter reader have at least attempted to ask him to bring his dogs inside before he proceded to mace them?
7. FACES NOT NUMBERS BANNER (podcast) - D&D spoke with Elaine from Stahls ID Direct, the company that is printing the "Faces Not Numbers" banner. According to Elaine, the banner is around 100ft long and will take roughly 25 people to hold it up.
8. CHUCK DALY 1930-2009 (podcast) - Legendary former Pistons coach, Chuck Daly, passed away on May 9th. Chuck was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March. George Blaha called into the show to share a few fond memories of Chuck.

Go Wings! My original guess was Wings in 5, so I'll only be one game off. And it's all Brad Watson's fault. Detroit over Chicago in 6, then Detroit over Washington in 6. Game, set, match. In other news, glad the weekend is here. Fun Friday show today, though the lack of a Friday Game is still hard to swallow. Wings have what is honestly a must-win game tonight. Don't want to be facing elimination. I haven't listened to D&D's interview with Chelios from this morning, but I gotta feel bad for him. He couldn't catch up to Selanne on the first Duck goal in Game 3, he only played 6:50 out of the 100-minute plus 3OT Game 2, and the Versus analysts stated that the only reason Detroit was "forced" to play him was due to Rafalski's injury. Ozzie needs to seriously out-play Hiller. Anyway, here's a few other segments from this morning's show courtesy of WCSX.com:

3. 696 BRIDGE JUMPER (podcast) - A man threatened to jump from a bridge above a Detroit-area freeway for more than eight hours before surrendering to officers. Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer says the 51-year-old St. Clair Shores man was clad only in green shorts on a pedestrian bridge above Interstate 696. Dwyer says the man lost his job in November and is depressed. A passing motorist called police shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday. The freeway then was closed, snarling traffic in the suburbs north of Detroit. Dwyer says the man ended the standoff around 7:20 p.m. and cooperated with officers.
4. ADAOBI [TRISHA] NWAUBANI - We have all been pounded with email scams...Remember the famous Nigerian email scam? Adaobi Nwaubani personally knows some of those scammers! You thought Eddie Haskell was a bad friend?

Four months into the "new" D&D Show (though "The First 86 Days" doesn't have quite the ring as "The First 100 Days"), what's the verdict? Seems like it's going good to me, but I am not one of TPTB.
