D&D - Oct 30, 2009

Pistons-dominated show today, as was to be expected when it was announced the guys would be broadcasting from the locker room. I wonder how the local classic rock station managed to usurp either of the local sports stations? The Pistons are, in a way, the black sheep of the Detroit pro sports family. Not only are they the only remaning "Detroit" team who play their "home" games in the suburbs, their President is a guy who runs a competing team in another league (and who paired up today with an organization headed by a guy who owns another competing team in the same league -- at least that guy owns a local company and a local major junior team). Anyway...along with the interviews that were podcasted, D&D spoke with Patricia Ellis from the aforementioned Karmanos Cancer Center and Palace President (and Lightning CEO) Tom Wilson. Non-basketball topics included a first- and second-hand report of yesterday's Pig Plague vaccine mayhem from Commerce Township, a report on the genetic component of bad driving (hint, if you have a vagina, wrinkled skin, and/or lack the ability to pronounce the letter L...), an Octomom Halloween costume breaking news alert, and a review of last night's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame anniversary show. Keeping to the pre-party Halloween theme (can't do it tomorrow, as the show will be live from the Palace of Auburn Hills), we had segments about Nicole's costume, a two-part interview with a Corpse Whisperer (and her pseudo-skeptical interviewer from Channel 7, Alicia Smith), an appearance by a Wolfman (and his opinion on the best Halloween movie ever), and a run-in with Oakland University's Freddy Kreuger. Heavy on the interviews today; all three are listed below. By the way, whoever thought a discussion about The Simpsons would turn out so boring? The call-in segments got mostly shafted in the podcast department today; calls were taken about prime spouse algorithms, top Halloween songs (no Great Pumpkin?), and Mr. Doyle's numerical lyric-enigma. Other topics included a blurb about the new Michael Jackson money-making scheme movie, an update on those silly distracted pilots (umm, yeah), a playful pissing contest (that sounds very NSFW) between Jeff and Jamie about celebrity run-ins, and a new iPhone app that will drive your car for you. I wonder if D&D took some LSD before constructing today's show, as the topics from this morning were all over the board. The first hour started with part of a tape-delayed, train-wreck interview from yesterday segueing into a discussion about fad diets, then a long segment about perverts (with obligatory Chris Hanson clips), and ending with several cuts from the new Bob Dylan Christmas album. We had a call-in segment about fantasy TV show remakes mid-show and another about how to get lost on the Internet towards the end of the show (inspired by these guys). Bruce Springsteen made an appearance (not really); the Classic Rock Song of the Day giveaway is for Bruce tickets, his upcoming concert at the Palace was promoted, and the guys mentioned his recent concert cancellation due to a death in his family / touring company. D&D - Oct 21, 2009

The D&D formula as of late seems to be focused on fewer and longer segments during the course of each show; the lack of music (for the most part) and the less frequent commercial breaks seems to be allowing lengthier discussions on each topic. There's still usually "Doyle Pop Culture Time" during the show where Bill throws out some short oddball, topical, or local news items (today it was a report about Charles Pugh's imminent foreclosure, a study that found that the modern human is fat and lazy, and a tip on how not to kill raccoons in your mobile home). As we've stated before, the influx of more call-in segments has been going on for a while now, but the longer segments are allowing more than one or two callers to chime in before the topic is changed (a little pet peeve of mine). Such was the case with today's debate on nudism in the home, inspired by this story of a dude getting arrested for being butt-ass-naked in his own home. At least he didn't decide to drive to the new Sonic in Troy while in his birthday suit. There was also another round of Play the Numbers, as well as these featured segments, courtesy of the apocalypse predictors over at WCSX.com:

Hey Mr. D&D Webmaster...if you're going to podcast 75-85% of the entire show, why don't you just do what some people do and have a subscription service offering full-show podcasts and other member-only services? I'm not sure if there are any non-syndicated radio shows that do this (and yes, I know it'd make this blog obsolete), but I think D&D would have the audience for it. They've been in Detroit for a long time. As I alluded to, the majority of the show was podcasted for the third straight day. There were only a few call-in segments that aren't up on the official website -- a Port Huron story led to calls on "dummies with guns," listeners called in song suggestions for the D&D Halloween Howl party, and Vic Mizzy's passing inspired a short "Name That TV Theme Song" game. There were a couple amusing segments from the beginning of today's show that didn't end up on the website -- Deminski probably vetoed the corqphinorshing podcast and the "family fights" discussion ended on too much of a down note after Wingasaurus called in -- but the vast remainder of the show was again podcasted. This again leaves me in the precarious position of a procrastinating college student up against a rigid deadline trying to feverishly bullshit his way through a 3,000-word essay by repeatedly punctuating every single noun with a bright adjective and going off on more nonsensical tangents than a high-school trigonometry textbook. Very, very funny show today, from the Farmville update to the comedian to the beer for breakfast -- and that was all before 7am! Almost the entire show was podcasted (or otherwise listed on the D&D website), so there isn't much content to report on other than what's listed below. The only topics mentioned during the show but not on the website was an update to the Balloon Boy story - seems like a hoax to me as well. The elongated Stump the Breeder game brought back flashbacks of Friday Games of yore; Christopher and Kevin honestly need to be more frequent guests to the studio. D&D - Oct 15, 2009

Seems like it's back to basics for D&D. They managed to have a classic-rock related interview (#3 below) without playing a "cut" from Bob Seger, there was a psuedo-"What's Normal" segment about man-bags and carrying purses ("I ain't gay or nothin'!"), and D&D let callers chime in with their opinions on the Ashley Madison Agency right after interviewing its founder (#4 below). The show was opened with another call-in segment -- Jeff told a story about racial profiling at retail locations. Rudy cracks aside, he had an interesting point, but I reeeeally hope D&D doesn't devolve into a Crossfire-style, left (Deminski) vs. right (Doyle) political show. I highly doubt that'll ever happen, but then again I was highly doubtful we'd ever see D&D spinning records. Other topics mentioned on the show today included a list of a few olden days-style "shitty jobs," a local story about a thug using his mom as his wheelman (stay classy, dude), and some predictions about the upcoming Michael Jackson movie, "Squeezing Money From a Corpse." Missing a chunk of today's show (last few minutes of Hour 1 and the first segment of Hour 2), but I have another source coming in this afternoon so we'll be able to get it fixed! Tiger-centric (ed: I agree with WoJo here) show today, obviously, and a sad one at that. Rudy is never going to another Tigers' game -- he put his PS3 where his mouth is, saying he'd give it away on the show if he broke his oath in 2010. The guys also did "Pick a Theme Song For Migeul Cabrera" game to vent some frustration. IMHO, he's just a straw man, Tigers need another big bat next year and smarter acquisitions *coughHuff&Williscough* -- but the list of the easiest booze to make at home was an interesting tangent. Leyland's tension-filled presser from yesterday morning was also discussed. Hey, would you look at this? When Jamie Samuelsen joined D&D on Sept. 14, the Tigers were 5 1/2 games up on Minnesota. Did he have anything to do with the collapse? I'm not saying he did, but one could wonder...hey, yeah, I am trying out for an anchor job at Fox News, how did you guess? D&D - Oct 6, 2009

It's Opposite Day! Or maybe WCSX folk read this blog (I doubt it, as I haven't gotten any C&D Letters yet). Nearly the entire 6am hour (with the exception of an update to the Who-the-Hell-Would-Have-Sex-With-David-Letterman sex scandal) was podcasted while the majority of the 8am hour was not. Topics crammed into the final hour of the show today ranged from When Animals Attack stories about a pack of rabid raccoons and a deadly pet bear to TV clips (Donnie went gay on DWtS and Jon Stewart bashed the anti-Americanism of the Right). There was also a weird story about a clash between Dr. Dre fans and Beatles fans as well as a couple call-in segments about baseball superstitions (see here, here, and here) and a "battle" of the bands. A lot of time was spent on tonight's Tigers game -- Deminski may forgo Obama's footsteps and blow off a parent-teacher conference in lieu of watching the game. Nearly all of the segments from the 7am and 8am hours ended up on the official website as podcasts -- looks like we're back to the short-term-memory-impaired WCSX website editors neglecting the first hour of the show. Topics from that forgotten early hour included two sports stories -- Ted Williams' head got stuck to a tuna can and Miguel Cabrera got in a "fight" with his "dog" -- as well as an interview with comedian and voice actor Craig Gass. D&D web content at the official site has been a little sparse lately -- I guess that's what happens when your producer is on vacation and your assistant producer has to play auto mechanic! (see #4 below ;) Lot of funny topics that should have been podcasted today; Nicole is writing a Driving For Dummies book, martial artist Kevin Taylor is hoping to make an appearance on the "new" D&D show, Michigan shut down for a couple hours last night, and Saturn (the car company) is going the way of Pluto (the planet).
