D&D - Aug 14, 2009

Casual "déjà vu" Friday show today. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of Woodstock, D&D replayed a 3-way interview from a couple months ago they did with three guys who played at the festival. They also had saxophonist Alto Reed in the studio for a second time (no speeding tickets or in-studio sax playing this time). And inspired by a Minnesota story, Doyle again flashed back to his days in Catholic school and the crazy nuns he once knew. Play the Numbers was revisited as well (I actually got this one!) and today's Workforce Business of the Day interview was with DJ Loco Joe from DJDiscJockey.com. A few of the smaller stories mentioned this morning included Stewie Griffin's coming-out, a new Wolfenstein game, and a couple Michael Vick stories (60 Minutes interview and PETA protest). Other topics covered were, courtesy of WCSX.com:

1. EDDIE VAN HALEN AND LES PAUL (video) - The great Eddie Van Halen plays a tribute to Les Paul! Check out this awesome video!
2. BARBARA CORCORAN "SHARK TANK" (podcast) - One of the "sharks" from ABC's "Shark Tank" Barbara Corcoran gave us a call this morning...This show involves inventors attempting to pitch their ideas to would be investors...So Doyle seized the opportunity to pitch "The Gamer Trough." [They started the interview late and she trashed the GT -- EPIC DOUBLE FAIL!]
3. PETER FRAMPTON ON LES PAUL (podcast) - Guitar Great Peter Frampton called in this morning to speak on the passing of Les Paul...Les Paul was a pioneer in the development of the solid-body electric guitar which "made the sound of rock and roll possible." He is credited with inventing or discovering many recording innovations including overdubbing (also known as sound on sound), delay effects such as tape delay, phasing effects, and multitrack recording. Les Paul 1915-2009.
4. DAN SHAUGNESSY (podcast) - Dan is a writer and fellow media member...But he is a Red Sox homer...He wrote a revision about the Youk-Porcello take-down...Claiming Youk took down Porcello "like a baby calf!" What game were you watching dude?
5. BOSTONISMS (podcast) - Since D&D were on in Boston this week they decided to see if some of these Bostonisms were true...Rudy was no help...Usually never is...But at least they got some calls from "Bean Town," to confirm!

D&D - Aug 13, 2009

Mr. Deminski has not had a whole lot of luck the last few days. First he masculinized a female caller yesterday, then his attempt to have his nerves soothed about his son's errr...digestive issues this morning backfired, and later on in the show he recounted how the segment they did on Tuesday about the VIP hospital care available to Boston-area pro sports teams' season ticket holders was heard by the Greater Media CEO, in the aforementioned Boston-area hospital, where he is on the Board of Directors. Talk about getting caught with your pants down, Jeff! Just don't go all Ed Offord on us, dude.

Other, non-depressed-downer-Deminski topics from today's show included a couple call-in segments (about male babysitters and imprisoning parents for their kids' indiscretions), a discussion about artistic license in books and movies (edit 8/14: this is the article Doyle mentioned), a clip from the Daily Show of Obama "doing a Biden," as well as a a few short blurbs about a PETA protest against a new Adam Sandler / Kevin James movie, a Best Buy "oopsie," and an excuse for playing fantasy football. Web-worthy topics included, as listed on WCSX.com:

1. MARK ARMINSKI - IN STUDIO (pics) - One of the greatest poster and handbill designers of our time in studio!...he's hosting "Rewind After Hours: The Art of Rock and Roll" at the Henry Ford Museum NEXT Thursday - we'll have tickets for the event AND he's going to bring in one of his prints to sign and give away...check out some of his work below. Check out Mark's official website! Mark will also be appearing at The Henry Ford Museum next week!
2. PURSUIT ENDS IN CRASH, EXPLOSION (video) - A police pursuit on Detroit's west side led to fiery crash and explosion Thursday morning. SkyFOX captured video of a pursuit Thursday morning as a fleeing vehicle sped down Michigan Avenue near Livernois. Trying to avoid an oncoming vehicle, the driver lost control and slammed into another truck before exploding.
3. DOGS GET OUT OF HAND! (video) - Local BC noon anchor Randene Neill tries to handle Ginger, a dog looking to be adopted from the SPCA. What ensues during the segment is pure hilarity. Check out the video!
4. RUDE CONGRESSWOMAN! (video) - Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee talks on the phone as a woman asks a question at a town hall event...Talk about rude! At least order a pizza for everyone Spicoli!
5. DOG ATTACKS (podcast) - Pit Bulls get alot of negative press. So to be fair, D&D took phonecalls about people being bitten by SMALL, seemingly non vicious dogs. Who knew little dogs could do so much damage?
6. LINK CHRISTIN (podcast) - D&D talked to one of the passengers that was trapped on the airplane for over 9 hours - even though the terminal was just a few yards away!!
7. NICOLE WALKS IN ON A GUY (podcast) - Nicole Salem is good at causing embarassing (sic) situations. This time, she walked in on a guy using a public unisex bathroom at a gas station. FAIL.

D&D - Aug 12, 2009

Today's show featured a welcome tinge of liberalism. For example, topics covered included the new 230 mpg electric Chevy Volt (for more technical aspects of the Volt, watch a clip of yesterday's Rachel Maddow Show here), yesterday's Obama town hall (I agree with Lawrence O'Donnell, nearly all people have a lot more respect for the office of the President than they do for members of Congress), the 40th anniversary of the hippie-fest known as Woodstock, as well as a discussion about the traditional roles of men and women in the home. D&D revisited the horrible Killers' "Hotel California" cover from Monday and played a few clips of lounge act cover artist Richard Cheese (umm...your name is "dick cheese?" [possible NSFW]). They also covered a few local stories -- the debate over toll roads in Michigan, an interview with Joseph Longo from Warren Doors (today's Workforce Business of the Day winner), plus a couple Parent of the Year stories from Utica and Windsor. Other "featured" topics were, courtesy of WCSX.com:

1. WALK4FRIENDSHIP 2009 (link) - If you'd like to donate to the 2009 Walk4Friendship to benefit the Friendship Circle - click here.
2. BEN WALLACE IS BACK...SORTA (pic) - Ben Wallace is back with the Pistons...check out this EPIC FAIL on the part of Channel 7...Nice picture of Rasheed Wallace!
3. PORCELLO 1 YOUKILIS 0 (video) - There were some great ones! Ali vs. Frazier, Rocky vs. Apollo, Probert vs. Domi, Godzilla vs. Mothra, and now Porcello vs Youkilis! The tale of the tape looks like this...Rick Porcello is 21 and stands 6'5" 200lbs and Kevin Youkilis is 30 and stands 6'1" 220lbs...Youkilis not only did you get beaned, but you received the most "electrifying" move in sports entertainment (The Rock Bottom) from a guy 20lbs lighter than you!
4. KATE HANNI-FLYER'S RIGHTS (podcast) - Kate Hanni is an advocate for flyer's getting stranded in planes...Man does she have some horror stories! Don't you hate being stranded on a plane for hours with the terminal in sight? There needs to be something done! D&D talked to Kate, the director of Flyer's Rights...check out their website!
5. DRINKING WITH YOUR KIDS (podcast) - Some experts recommend you let your kids drink underage and drink with them? Where were these people when we were young? At what age were you allowed to drink? Did your parents let you have some wine at dinner? Is it safer introducing your children to alcohol at a young age? Check out this article!
6. JAIL OVER CHILD SUPPORT (podcast) - A man spent a year in jail over child support for a kid that wasn't even his! Has this ever happenedto you or anyone you know? You should have called Maury earlier dude!
7. WARREN MOON (podcast) - D&D spoke with Hall Of Fame Quarterback Warren Moon...Moon has a book out called "Never Give Up On Your Dream: My Journey."
8. RUDY'S PROBLEM (podcast) - Rudy just became a homeowner a few weeks ago…Now he thinks squirrels are eating his grass? Oh yeah, remember the friend who wanted to store a jet-ski in Rudy's garage? Well it's been longer than 2 weeks and the jet-ski is still there! FAIL!

D&D - Aug 11, 2009

We definitely had a nice surprise the last couple days -- D&D have actually been able to have a talk show instead of worrying about spinning a certain number of records each hour. The longer, D&D-esque segments are back -- this includes both the call-in segments (such as podcasts #3 and #4 below or a discussion on paycuts vs. job losses) and the intra-studio bickering and joking (á la podcast #2 below or this morning's arguments about post-sleep peeing priority, the concept of "plane prisons," or professional players' practitioners producing VP patient privileges). Other points put up during today's program ranged from a cross-dressing wife-killer, a mistranslation that ruffled Hillary Clinton, the death of the Governator's M.I.L., a bit of a Joe Perry interview with Ken Calvert from yesterday, a clip from Who Wants to be a Thousandaire, and something uninteresting about Olivia Newton John's husband. Podcast-worthy topics from today were, as stolen from WCSX.com:

1. CHEECH AND CHONG (podcast) - Cheech and Chong called in to today's show!! You can see them tonight on VH1's "Lords of The Revolution" at 8pm.
2. THE IMMIGRANT TEST (podcast) - Do Rudy and Nicole deserve to be US citizens? D&D gave them a portion of an immigration test. EPIC FAIL. We'll see if Nicole is still laughing when she gets deported...
3. INJURY BY FRIEND (podcast) - A funny news story got D&D talking about being on the receiving end of an injury - that a friend caused! Psst...Don’t be friends with Jim O'Brien.
4. SEX ON THE FIRST DATE (podcast) - Jim O'Brien and Jeff Deminski had a bet going - is it possible to have a healthy long term relationship with someone if you sleep with them on the first date? [note: listen as Rudy's mic accidentally clicks on and we hear him cuss out screen callers in the background.]
5. D-list week of 8/10 (video) - Weekly D&D update video.

D&D - Aug 10, 2009

Wow has this show evolved. Their FCC complaints used to be about Dirty Sanchezes and Cleveland Steamers and now people are complaining about a rant against bicyclists? C'mon, we all know the only reason you ride a bike to work is because your license got taken away after your last DUI. The guy they interviewed today wasn't just a dick, he was a nervous dick. Come to think of it, maybe the issue here is not that the show has changed since 2002 (though of course it has), rather perhaps bicyclists (and Americans in general) are too self-absorbed and self-centric and just appalled when someone calls them out on their bullshit. Other (obviously less important) topics covered today included a couple quizzes for Rudy (texting shorthand and rock band "madien names"), a couple Stupid Nicole Stories, a disturbing 911 call from a guy who pushed his girlfriend out a window, a horrible cover of and Eagles song, new anti-smoking job requirements, as well as a couple short blurbs about "tainted" houses for sale and canine intelligence. David Sklena, owner of Doc Sweets' Candy (today's Workforce Business of the Day winner) popped on the air as well to plug his shop. Other segments were (courtesy of WCSX.com):

1. WTKK (link) - D&D are begin simulcasted on Greater Media's Boston-based sister station 96.9 WTKK this week while Don "Nappy Roots" Imus is on vacation. Good for Jeff & Bill to get some more exposure and possibly some new listeners (especially nice to see them back on an all-talk station), but could they maybe get to sub on something other than a conservative, ultra right-wing station next time?
2. BIKE GATE: WEEK 2 (podcast) - D&D spoke with Paul Alman from the Washtenaw Bicycling and Walking Coalition about our discussion last week regarding bicyclists and safety...[also, here are a few of the anti-D&D blogs, newspaper articles, and e-mail list postings that have popped up.]
3. BOWEN KERINS (podcast) - D&D talked to Bowen Kerins - world pinball champ from Salem, Massachusetts. So is it a "sport," something takes skill - or is it just a game? [I'm not sure myself, but like some sports, it is something that causes people to swear on the air.]
4. ROD ALLEN (podcast) - Rod Allen called in for his weekly Tigers report - will we continue our streak against the Red Sox? Rod also talked about being at Fenway Park.
