D&D - Aug 20, 2009

D&D keep mentioning that they need to change their intro again -- a fellow listener posted a "remixed" intro to the Yahoo Group a while back and while it's a little bit longer than the current "official" one, I like it better so I'm going to graft if on to the beginning of the Hour 1 recordings every day until they change it. Like Doyle, I miss the Dirty Deeds' AC/DC parody theme. Anyway...very full show today. There were a bunch of local topics covered today, including an arson spike in Michigan due to the economy, the story of the local 12-year-old arrested for murder, an argument between Jim O'Brien and Uncle Buck about being "one of those" crazy sports parents, and a possible change to Michigan high school math requirements that prompted Deminski to have a quick call-in trick math quiz. They also had listeners call in for a Tigers' mystery fan game, a discussion about leaving dogs in hot cars (inspired, of course, by Nicole), a sleeper-type personality quiz, and during a segment about stealing cars during a test drive. There were also a few small stories about a hungry woman at the Iowa State Fair, a deserved mocking directed toward a right-wing nutjob by Congressman Barney Frank, and Google's threat to decades-old communication monopolies. Web-worthy topics were, as decided by WCSX.com:

1. AWESOME HOMELESS GUY SIGNS (link) - Now days, being homeless is more competitive than ever. Only the most clever and creative signs are going to get people to let go of their precious spare change. This makes for some pretty awesome homeless dude signage. Check out the signs here!
2. IS SHE A HE? (link) - The 18-year-old 800m gold medal favorite has burst on to the world scene in recent months, with her appearance, including obvious facial hair, and muscular build igniting speculation about her gender. Judge for yourself here!
3. GAUGING YOUR DISTRACTION (link) - New studies show that drivers overestimate their ability to multitask behind the wheel. This game measures how your reaction time is affected by external distractions. Regardless of your results, experts say, you should not attempt to text when driving. Try out the game!
4. THISISPHOTOBOMB.COM (link) - Mentioned by Doyle on the air, this NSFW website is about as addicting as any "funny photo" website can be on the Internet. And it's blocked by my company's firewall -- awwww, dangit!
5. BOOZE A KIDS BIRTHDAY PARTY? (podcast) - Would you allow alcohol at your kid’s birthday party? Keep in mind we are talking toddlers...and this would be for the adults...Or is the party supposed to be all about the kids?
6. THE FART MACHINE (podcast) - Jeff bought his son a fart machine...Harmless right? Well Jeff insisted that his son bring it to pre-school...What could go wrong?

Gawd I hate that new opening theme. The older one was much better (the "TNT" themed one). Those other jokers with thier TNT variant make me wanna hork.

You don't like the new TNT parody that they had from Jan-July 2009? That was done by the same AC/DC tribute band that they used at 97.1. Or do you not like the one they've used for the last month with the Detroit media clips and Detroit-themed song clips? The one that is on the show from today was made by a listener and I stuck it on there myself...

I was referring to the "TNT" themed thing they used for a while....the newer one. The old one was higher quality. On the new one, the singer does that ultra fake brian johnson croak....on a Bon Scott era tune. Most singers don't get it. Bon had a unique voice that few can duplicate, but you'll get closer to it just by hitting the correct notes with some push behind it. There's a band called Rhino Bucket that comes closer than any tribute band I've ever heard. They duplicate the guitar tones...everything.Trying to fake a Brian Johnson is just tasteless. Brian didn't *try* to have an abrasive voice, its just the way it was/is. Another case for just hit the notes and do it like you mean it. When you throw fake gravel into it, you end up cheesy sounding. Hence, the newer theme. As a 30 year musician/sound engineer it just bugs me.

I agree, the theme song they had at 97.1 was much better quality. The one at WCSX was horrible!! The new one they have with the Detroit clips is also horrible. I am sure there is someone out there who could make a better theme song. Hell I liked mindcandy's open they had for awhile. I'm sure Rudy could put something together.

It's weird, maybe just 'cause I'm not really an AC/DC fan, but I didn't really notice a huge, huge difference. It's the same cover band -- maybe they rushed through the recording they did for WCSX? Not a fan of the current intro, that's why I stuck in a remix I found online...I agree with Supersize, Rudy has a new band, what better way to promote it?

Same band, possibly a different singer.

Ooooh ok, that makes sense. I remember trying to help Jeff find Dirty Deeds' website during late 2008 and I thought they might have broken up since the website was down.
